We urgently need Congress to act to #ReinInBigTech, but #KOSA is not the bill. This legislation would make vulnerable kids less safe and could be weaponized against the #LGBTQ community. Congress should focus on #antitrust and #privacy instead. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/28/kids-online-safety-act-may-harm-minors-civil-society-groups-warn.html

Here's a scatterplot of health spending per capita (x axis) and life expectancy (y axis) in OECD countries. The lines represent averages.
One country sits alone in the bottom right quadrant due to its much higher health spending and below-average life expectancy.

Would the protests in China be illegal in the UK after the Police and Crime Bill have passed? If they were committing any public order offences then under the Online Safety Bill platforms would be legally required to censor that content. That should scare you deeply https://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/online-safety-bill-will-the-upload-filter-ban-images-of-protest/

Purely on the basis of self-interest, you should want your nurse to be well-fed, rested, and not distracted by worrying about how to pay their bills while they make life-or-death decisions about your care.
They are fighting to give you better care, idiots.

I think it's important for Fedizens - denizens of the Fediverse - to be aware of the Paradox of Tolerance (particularly those doing moderation!) with the goal of exercising enlightened behaviours within your 'corner' of the Fediverse: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance
Dear #drummers of Mastodon, I've done it. We now have our own space in the #Fediverse !
Come and join https://drumstodon.net ...
Let's build up our own community with all things #drums , #drumming and #music !
(All musicians are truly welcome.)
Please boost for reach. Thanks!
If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.
And keep in mind that the term "redistribution" also invokes unhelpful ideas. Low- and middle- income people in wealthy countries who know that their income is above the international average hear "redistribution" and try to imagine how they could possibly make do with even less.
@mkwadee Hi, Khurram, can I persuade you to give our family's "home-cooked" word game a go? Would be interested to know what you think. Please share if you like it! https://foximax.com
I agree that "degrowth" is a charged term. However, I also dislike "Steady State Economics" because I don't like the implication that where we are is good. For me, an important part of what degrowth means is looking for ways in which scaling things back would *improve* human well-being.
For example, channeling resources away from growth and toward safety nets would mean that currently overworked laborers could have more time for self-care, creativity, and caring for others.
