Here's some masto history

There was a period of severe #racism here on masto. And not just from the shitty nazi side.

Just a lot of white liberal "left" people who felt that they were God's Gift to Mankind.

Who knew how to walk the walk. But the moment you pushed even slightly at them. Pointed out how a statement could be read as inflammatory. Pointed out an outdated term.

They exploded. Shit the fucking bed. And then left in a huff.

It took a group of #BIPOC users getting together and agreeing to work together for a while in dealing with these "subtle" racists for anything to get done. Because, of course, these shitlords made themselves popular amongst the white population.

But, it has happened. there was a solid year of stress and daily racism at some pretty extreme levels.

but there has been a sharp decrease of racism. Not an ending, I ain't ignorant. But a step, and a big enough step that I know of several instances on here that I can reach out to whenever I feel racially targeted to help me out.

I worry about how many of those shitheads are going to sneak in with the current iteration of new users.

But it isn't hopeless. We just have to remain vigilant and reach out to our fellow BIPOC for backup.

Yesterday I posted about how SPD swept a squatted mutual aid station in #Seattle at Cal Anderson Park that has been assisting unhoused folks for weeks. Well, people who want to criminalise trans children are winning political power, but at least US leftists didn't have to compromise their values by participating in a corrupt process.

This viewpoint is uniquely american. Y'all have been played by propaganda, which you'll defend to the death before examining critically the effects of your (in)action.

In like every other country, anarchists vote. Not because they believe liberal nonsense, but to mitigate harm and give themselves the best possible footing on which to fight for a better world. That's what people do when they care about winning rather than about posing or about their precious purity.

(Yes I know, this is actually the fault of people who voted republican, but those people usually aren't pretending to be on my side while discouraging my allies from trying to mitigate harm.)

Turns out that Mastodon instances are seeing a major uptick in system requirements even if their user numbers haven't gone up much, just due to the massive spike in Fediverse activity in the past week or so. Also turns out it's easy to increase the capabilities of a Docker-based Mastodon instance like the 4 I run (hadn't had to confront that sort of problem previously!). I'll write something up about it on https://tech.oeru.org...

I would love to support Māori to set up dedicated instances; digital marae where you are in charge of the kawa and kaitiakitanga of your own data. You decide who can speak in the wharenui (join the instance) and on the marae atea (Federated timeline). You can even host an instance on a computer in your rohe if you want to. Not something you can do with Titter or TikTak ;)
