Here's some masto history

There was a period of severe #racism here on masto. And not just from the shitty nazi side.

Just a lot of white liberal "left" people who felt that they were God's Gift to Mankind.

Who knew how to walk the walk. But the moment you pushed even slightly at them. Pointed out how a statement could be read as inflammatory. Pointed out an outdated term.

They exploded. Shit the fucking bed. And then left in a huff.

It took a group of #BIPOC users getting together and agreeing to work together for a while in dealing with these "subtle" racists for anything to get done. Because, of course, these shitlords made themselves popular amongst the white population.

But, it has happened. there was a solid year of stress and daily racism at some pretty extreme levels.

but there has been a sharp decrease of racism. Not an ending, I ain't ignorant. But a step, and a big enough step that I know of several instances on here that I can reach out to whenever I feel racially targeted to help me out.

I worry about how many of those shitheads are going to sneak in with the current iteration of new users.

But it isn't hopeless. We just have to remain vigilant and reach out to our fellow BIPOC for backup.

"But what does the peer-reviewed science say about the potential of #soil #CarbonSequestration approaches? The principles behind soil carbon sequestration are sound and fairly well understood. To grasp its potential, we have to understand the depleted state of soils today. Soils are vast reservoirs of carbon: they hold three times the amount of CO, currently in the atmosphere, or almost four times the amount held in living matter. But over the last 10,000 years, agriculture and land conversion has decreased soil carbon globally by 840 gigatons, and many cultivated soils have lost 50 to 70 percent of their original organic carbon. Intensive crop cultivation can reduce soil carbon by 25 to 50 percent in just thirty to fifty years. The good news is that this can be reversed."

📰 In this interview with Lydia X. Z. Brown from the #Privacy and Consumer Data Project at the Center for Democracy and Technology, read about the systematic #disenfranchisement that is coded into #technology, which is often used to further oppress people with #disabilities.

🕵🏽 "The Rise of Luxury #Surveillance isn’t just imposed on people: Many of us buy into it willingly.

💬 "Taken as a whole, the #Amazon suite of consumer products threatens to turn every home into a fun-house-mirror version of a fulfillment center. Ultimately, we may be managed as consumers the way the company currently manages its workers—the only difference being that customers will pay for the privilege."

Yesterday I posted about how SPD swept a squatted mutual aid station in #Seattle at Cal Anderson Park that has been assisting unhoused folks for weeks. In response to this sweep, community members went to the nearby East Precinct later that night, threw a couple dozen bags of garbage they had collected from around the park over the fortified wall around the precinct, and then molotov'd it before quickly dispersing. This message was left in their wake. #StopTheSweeps #SweepThis #FTP #ACAB #1312

Us pol / angry about fake "anarchist" discourse

Turns out that Mastodon instances are seeing a major uptick in system requirements even if their user numbers haven't gone up much, just due to the massive spike in Fediverse activity in the past week or so. Also turns out it's easy to increase the capabilities of a Docker-based Mastodon instance like the 4 I run (hadn't had to confront that sort of problem previously!). I'll write something up about it on tech.oeru.org...

I would love to support Māori to set up dedicated instances; digital marae where you are in charge of the kawa and kaitiakitanga of your own data. You decide who can speak in the wharenui (join the instance) and on the marae atea (Federated timeline). You can even host an instance on a computer in your rohe if you want to. Not something you can do with Titter or TikTak ;)

I wonder if this service named after the great confession of Bertie Wooster’s: “As a rule, you see, I'm not lugged into Family Rows. On the occasions when Aunt is calling Aunt like mastodons bellowing across premieval swamps … the clan has a tendency to ignore me.”

#introduction - now that you've untied yourself from the bird site with their algorithms and bots, how about doing that with your desktop? @gnome and @kde are here to replace your proprietary option with the same sense of community and thought that went into mastodon!

:anarchism: 👇WORKSHOP DETAILS 👇:fediverso:

(please booooost!)

🗓 This SUNDAY November 13th at 11am ET we're presenting our workshop "Alternative Social Media for Anarchists - An Anarchist Introduction to the Fediverse"

The workshop is ONLINE on zoom, as part of the Boston Anarchist Bookfair: bostonanarchistbookfair.org/20

🤓 First we will explain what the Fediverse is, how it works, and why anarchists should embrace it. :anarchism:

Then we will invite participants to register for an account at an instance and do a guided walkthrough/tutorial of how to use Mastodon! 🐘🤔

Please BOOST! 🗣 and share far and wide both on and off Fedi. This will be a great way for new or curious users to understand the Fediverse and how to get started on here! It will be a very nice and safe hand holding workshop! If you just got here and are lost and confused, come! And bring a friend who is curious!

✅ You need to register in advance with the bookfair to get a link to the zoom on Sunday. Registration link: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regist

👉 (please do not reply complaining about how the workshop is on zoom! The Boston Anarchist Bookfair is the host, and so we are beholden to their choice of platform. They are running their bookfair as they see fit to reach and accommodate their audience. We already know why zoom is evil. Don't bother @ ing us to tell us. We will happily give the workshop again on Jitsi or another platform if another org would like to host and promote it, so just get in touch!)

Hi everyone! This is my first time tooting over here (is tooting a word?) 😆

Do you recommend a native mastodon client for Linux? Preferably GTK and distributed as a Flatpak.

👁️ Remixing Linux for #blind and visually impaired users: #Vojtux, a @fedora project, is an unofficial #Linux distribution aimed at visually impaired users.

💬 "When building products or creating content, your choices have a huge effect on #accessibility and how easy it is for us to engage with the end result. Know that we are here, we love to use computers and technology, and we're often willing to help you test it, too."
