We are extending the fundraiser for Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard for one more week. If you haven't already donated, please do now. And if you have, please remind your friends.

Our friend and longtime cooperative advocate, Dr. Jessica Gordon-Nembhard, was sued last year by a member of the co-op community for "conspiring" and "defamatory" communication. Please donate to offset the considerable expense of her legal defense.

Good news! We've extended our #CfP until next Sunday, November 13, 23:59 CET! So if you haven't already, submit your proposal now at 23.foss-backstage.de/call-for- #fossback

I was talking to a younger (25+ years) local punk, who expressed that it was tough for a black, female punk rocker to make it. I commiserated that it was bad that the perception of punk rock came to be white, male dominated. It certainly wasn't an intention. When we were growing community in the 80s, it was anti-Reagan, which meant fighting the white male domination, racist, and Christian tenets that were being pushed.

For those of you who live in countries with sane health care systems (i.e. not the U.S.), please take a moment to appreciate that you don't have to deal with this kind of nonsense.

"IMPORTANT REMINDER: Check your 2022 FSA balance with EBPA now. For Health Care FSAs, you may only carry over $100-$570 of unused contributions into the next year; amounts under $100 or over $570 are forfeited"

(This a quote is from the employee benefits literature from my employer:)

One thing that keeps coming to mind is that Mastodon may be one of the few places that remains networked but illegible-at-scale as time goes on.

That is either a very sad state of affairs, or a sign of things moving in the right direction.

Some folks might notice that some of us provide links to videos that start with "https://invidious.something or other". invidious.io is a #FOSS service that wraps around YouTube like a condom protecting you (or whoever watches your link) from Google's normal intrusion into your privacy and metadata. There are lots of instances of Invidious - I tend to use invidious.snopyta.org because I've memorised it now. I usually also include a Youtube link in case the instance is down.

I encourage others to be aware that posting to proprietary services (like LinkedIn or FB) often creates an imposition on those clicking the link - they need to create an account to view the content in many cases. Just be conscious that this is an imposition on people who choose not to create such accounts due to the data sovereignty and privacy implications. Here's another example providing more detail: davelane.nz/notslack

But what you see now: Some outcome of our #hackathon (New footer + updated header)

But the most important patch is invisible to most, but crucial for many: improved #accessibility of our landing page, and there is more to come. Thank you so much!

How to migrate from one Mastodon server to another without losing followers:

1. Sign up on new server
2. On NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
5. Enter new account's handle and submit

I posted this on the birbsite, too:

There're only 3 types of folks who support #onlinevoting. Those who:
1. don't understand voting (but have unfounded 'faith' in technology),
2. hate democracy, &/or
3. have an online voting system to sell. Poor sods. 2/2

LIBERTARIAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

So it seems that trolls of the Trumpist frozen peach variety, mostly those who set up their own Pleroma instances when Parler got taken down, are undertaking a semi-coordinated effort to target journalists who sign up on Mastodon for a couple of reasons...

* Trump has taught them that professional journalism and critical thinking are elitist and bad so lets harass them until they go away

* they are trying to prove some sort of point that this place can be just as toxic as their beloved Frozen Peach in Chief's microblogging site

If you are a journo and you get dogpiled by trolls DO NOT ENGAGE with them at all! Immediately:

1. REPORT them to your instance mods, THEN
2. Block them

Step 1 is very important! This isn't twitter or facebook...mods will take swift action, and if they don't you can migrate instances to better moderated ones...

@scottjenson @lawremipsum On the mastodon home page, the two choices are Get the App and Find a Server. I want to make an account. There is no way from those choices I could deduce 'find a server' is the first step in account creation'.

When I check the menu, there is no Help or FAQ; the only two things that look helpful are Support and Documentation. Documentation generally refers to the technical details of a program; I want user level help. I click on Support. It's GitHub.
