While everyone is exploring new platforms, it's worth a reminder that Dreamwidth is still around: dreamwidth.org/

DW is a fork of LiveJournal, the ancient and original social-blogging platform, and it's still the best place for long-form posting with healthy communities. If you want to say things that don't fit in 500 characters, and want to foster good conversation, it's still the best. Check it out...

Periodic reminder: TechSoup is Microsoft's way of ensuring that NGOs get hooked into and fully dependent on its costly proprietary services rather than ever discovering what #FOSS could offer them. It undermines everything that Microsoft's PR insists it 'loves', but stabs in the back at every opportunity.

"For decades New Zealanders have been throwing our empty cans, boxes and plastic containers into the recycling, believing our actions were making a difference for the environment. What if we were not just wrong, but deceived?"

How Digital Systems Fail Our Institutions

I'm campaigning hard for a tool, that I'm involved maintaining, to get off of Microsoft GitHub, but not gaining much traction. Too many people still tied to big Tech and not seeing a problem with it.

Seeking ideas for community support around a violent neighbor

@Gargron wow, not wanting to add to your load... but I just saw that you've opted for Discord and Github Discussion for supporting #MastoAdmins. It's really disappointing that a FOSS paragon like Mastodon has snubbed the great FOSS support options, opting for such clangingly inappropriate closed technologies for its most crucial community members. Very bad optics. I won't use those tools on principle... but I would commit my time/$ to help you switch to & maintain suitable FOSS options.

I suppose it's time again for my monthly posting of "Free Software Needs Free Tools" by @mako:

Folks interested in the ongoing viability of our planet... (all of you, I would hope) if you don't know about Kate Raworth's "Doughnut Economics", you need to. Here's a very good interview in which she explains it quite well. planetcritical.com/p/the-most- She's also a big fan of FOSS and the open commons (she mentions Māori & Ubuntu)! And I'm *so* chuffed she explicitly cites Kim Stanley Robinson's "The Ministry for the Future"! Another essential read for anyone interested us having a viable future.

My first impression is that this is some kind of scam. Anybody know anything about them? #web3 #coop

The goal of every software project should be to no longer be maintained. Maintenance means repairs are needed or requirements haven't been realized. i.e., the project isn't complete.

It's illogical to say you're anti-government or pro small government and still support the police.
