If you have a Vodafone Ultra Hub router (like I do), I note that "Status->About" menu item (Advanced Mode) takes you to a page that says "Notice regarding Open Source software" which says "The product contains Open Source software. The resulting need [sic] licenses information's [sic] are listed in the following link." The link points to http://www3.technicolor.com/en/hi/minisites/open-software ... which redirects to https://technicolor.com which has nothing to do with open source licenses that I can see.
This has been bugging me for ages: how can we fix social and climate brokenness when lots of 'good' people's job hang in the balance? How can we broach the subject "Your role in that corporation is actively bad for the world. The better you do, the worse you make the world." It's not something anyone wants to hear... but highly paid folk voluntarily absorb incredible cognitive dissonance to justify how they pay their mortgage. Stuff like "if I didn't do it, someone else less ethical would"...
EFF and @ACLU_NorCal recently discovered the San Francisco police unilaterally deployed a surveillance camera network against protesters marching in defense of Black lives. Now we're asking a court to hold them accountable for breaking the law.

While several other courts have held that long-term pole camera surveillance is constitutionally acceptable, two recent rulings, including a recent ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court, have found otherwise. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/09/colorado-supreme-court-rules-three-months-warrantless-video-surveillance-violates
We’re pleased to share that the Atlas of Surveillance will be featured in the @IndianaUniv’s Places & Spaces exhibit, which highlights powerful uses of maps in sharing knowledge. You can browse our growing collection of data on police surveillance tools at http://www.atlasofsurveillance.org
Before assessing the value of synthestic starch, I really want to see a full life cycle analysis comparing this technology to traditional production. That seems to be where "vat meat" starts to look a lot more questionable (https://biobeef.faculty.ucdavis.edu/2019/12/15/cultured-meats-and-lca-statistics-what-do-the-data-say-2-of-4/).
In the meantime, it would be really nice if they provided units for this 8.5x efficiency number that all the science journalists are tossing around. Efficiency is usually calculated as units of product divided by units of some kind of input, but the results are very different depending on what kind of input goes in the denominator. Almonds are pretty efficient with regard to land, but a nightmare with regard to water inputs. Grassfed beef is extremely efficient with regard to fossil fuels, but a nightmare with regard to methane emissions. The journalistic coverage on this research doesn't specify, and at the moment I'm unable to put my hands on the _Science_ article, so the 8.5x number is basically meaningless.

Interoperability is tech's superpower! With it, new tech can unseat powerful incumbents. But decades of pro-monopoly laws have given Big Tech a veto over who can plug into its products. https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2021/10/255710-competitive-compatibility/fulltext
In line with a recent opinion from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, Colorado’s Supreme Court has found that warrantless, continuous, long-term video surveillance via pole camera violates violates reasonable expectations of privacy. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/09/colorado-supreme-court-rules-three-months-warrantless-video-surveillance-violates

Local governments should only give tax breaks to companies, if there is a demonstrated benefit in the local economy. If the standard of living increases, then jobs created have been beneficial. Tax breaks should be given in the form of community stock options, whose redemption value is tied to local economic gains. Local harms must also be accounted. e.g., environmental harms, traffic difficulties, etc.
1. Browsing the internet will never be secure as long as web pages can execute arbitrary JavaScript.
2. For security reasons, a password manager should never integrate with a web browser.
The following website shows why these two points are true.
If code development if funded by the taxpayer, the result should be entirely open source, no excuses. https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/if-software-funded-public-source-its-code-should-be-open-source If proprietary dev companies won't do that... then don't use them. Simple.
