"...because the law requires Category 1 services to allow users to block all unverified users from editing any content they post, the law effectively requires the Foundation to verify the identity of many Wikipedia contributors. However, that compelled verification undermines the privacy that keeps the site’s volunteers safe."

US Pol - dem leaders are useless

We didn't have enough medical privacy to begin with, but now the Trump regime, Big Tech (all of it), and Big Medicine are going to utterly shred the last vestiges of privacy.

Because they can. And because big money will be made by screwing the rest of us.

We just added 100 more Texas agencies using Flock Safety automated license plate readers to the Atlas of Surveillance. As police tech spreads, you can count on EFF to track it and fight for your rights.

If anyone is up for doing a #security review of Breakmancer's protocol (#cryptography, networking, handshake logic) I'd be *very* appreciative!

These are the most recent protocol docs: docs.rs/breakmancer/0.9.0/brea

It's nothing super complicated, just an exchange of X-Wing keys and a KDF, with out-of-band key verification—but *anything* can be gotten wrong. :-)

I'm currently building it for 64-bit Linux and (I think any model of) Raspberry Pi—those are the only kinds of computers I have available for testing!

If you have a Mac (Apple Silicon or older) and would like to help me test on a new platform, drop me a line. I'd be happy to provide a custom build.

🦀 New project: Breakmancer

🔬 Drop a remote breakpoint into any shell script you're debugging, no matter where it's running.

Breakmancer opens a secure channel back to your laptop and drops you into a simple command shell where you can issue bash commands and view streaming output. Perfect for debugging CI/CD stuff.

You don't even need to set up port forwarding—it can use Magic Wormhole to wire the two computers together!

Electricity is a natural monopoly and the idiots in power think they can solve it with "competition" and "markets" (change the record, it's stuck).

We need nationalisation (without compensation) NOW, followed by a massive build out of renewables (specifically solar and wind). The end result should be too-cheap-to-meter green energy.

This is an entirely achievable goal for #NewZealand and not even particularly ambitious.

#askfedi (where our tax consultant followers at?)

We are looking for a German tax consultant (Steuerberater) that is able to provide a one-off consultation related to how to invoice correctly and deal with taxes for some small amount of one-off money (<1000€) related to our legal status (fiscal host for an unincorporated group of individuals or "nicht eingetragener Verein"). We are very happy to pay for this work, but despite repeated attempts, we have not been able to find anybody willing to help us with something this specific as a one-off. If anybody in the fediverse happens to have some contact that might be able to, that would be extremely helpful.

Today's example: Trump apparatchik Bessent's bragging about privatizing social security -- a gift to the corrupt financial industry and disaster for seniors -- followed by disingenuous backtracking that is a blatant lie.

Codeberg now has an experimental way to report abuse to admins. It's WIP in #Forgejo and is going to be released in version 13 in some months. However, we deployed it on Codeberg to get some insights on how it works. Looking forward to your feedback!

The work was sponsored by @nlnet. Thank you very much!

The constitutional right to record law enforcement applies equally to immigration officers, and this story shows why.

These cops should be fired for a lot of reasons but their disregard for the First Amendment is one of them.

Guards regularly beat and abused inmates, including these individuals trafficked to El Salvador by the US government.

The US government, of course, was aware of this and wanted it to happen.

Trump is not an aberration; from Guantanamo to the CIA's extraordinary rendition program, extrajudicial violence against enemies of the American king has been going on for decades. And don't forget that Obama ordered a targeted assassination of a US citizen.

@andypiper The big tech platforms provide "social control media".

Some (like ) argue that Mastodon instances, and any other social application that allowa server side enforcing of codes of conduct, fall into that category. I would argue that the right to join a gated community is more "self control" than "social control", but I prefer self filtering over server filtering.

Remember when “social media” was “social networking”?

What changed? That second word: media. It’s all about capturing your attention and selling you stuff.

Humans are social and want to connect with one another. That’s what makes the #fediverse special to me - authentic connection. We haven’t forgotten the social part.

UK users of Reddit, X, Insta, FB, Bluesky, TikTok, and many other popular platforms are now facing problems. They are being forced to verify their age using government issued IDs and a selfie. All of these for-profit corporations may use this information further for profit or may not even store user information securely. This is a nightmare scenario for many, and I wouldn't be surprised if other governments adopt similar laws.
