Ask not what you Free Software can do for you, ask what you can do for Free Software. Okay, but seriously, there are several ways you can help Free Software forces and keep #FreeSoftware a viable option for future generations. The Digital Freedom Foundation is dedicated to celebrating and supporting Free Software. We can't do it alone. Your contributions are vital.

Join the Co-op Cloud Community for our informal, weekly(ish) drop-in "Kite-flying hour"

This week, we have 2 (TWO!) things so far, possibly in parallel if we can figure out breakout rooms:

1. Tagging maintenance issues with Abra (that's our command-line tool) for funded fixes, using our exciting new (&, for now, secret) grant money (hosted by decentral1se)
2. Collaborative co-operative Abra user troubleshooting (hosted by @autonomic)

We usually learn a lot about this on conferences but let's try it here as well:

If you're daily driving #phosh we're keen to here on which phone (or other device)? Which distro do you use and which phosh version are you currently running?

@fabio I was happy to hit the tail-end of the corporate largess in the mod-90s. On site library, training center, engineering support centers, all the IC vendors had offices close to the work campus, paid conference trips, and better than average benefits gave one the feeling they could contribute to things outside as well as inside the company. Unfortunately, it was the tail-end, so it slid into an average engineering environment, where there was more profit over people.

@lightshow Early in my professional career (mid-90s), the company I worked at had Unix workstations. These were different from dumb terminals in that they were imaged from the server, so the operations were done locally (instead of on the server). I've often wondered if any Linux installations did the equivalent.

Do any of the the open source / Linux admin people out there have any advice/ideas for how to manage a classroom of Ubuntu Linux laptops? The aim is to authenticate against the school active directory. Are there ways to manage software and re-image machines without managing them individually?

I talked to @404mediaco about generative AI's impact on teaching. Apparently I wasn't alone... not by a long shot. @jasonkoebler got a ton of responses about this topic and ran many of them here:

While it's distressing to read all of them, it's good to see I'm not alone.

“In 2017, ‘a confidential doc is leaked that reveals Facebook offering advertisers the opportunity to target 13-to-17yos across platforms during moments of psychological vulnerability when they feel ‘worthless,’ ‘insecure,’ ‘stressed,’ ‘defeated,’ ‘anxious,’ ‘stupid,’ ‘useless’ & ‘like a failure.’ Or target them when worried about their bodies & thinking of losing weight.’

They knew when a teen deleted a selfie & would bombard her w beauty ads, assuming she deleted it bc she felt ugly.” /1

@strypey I hit this problems too. I solved it buying a Oneplus Nord N10 for a very modest $165 from Aliexpress. This phone and several other Oneplus models can run LineageOS which also helped with my deGoogling efforts.

I used it for a couple of weeks on the stock image before I reflashed and that worked OK too.

Just found out that an old intranet we created for a customer (on Drupal 5?) back in 2008-9 is still running (not on the open internet). Their MS Sharepoint replacement for it has been... less than stunningly successful in its designated role. I suspect that original Internet would've cost the orders of magnitude less in up-front development and per-year maintenance.

A large #Lemmy instance is shutting down - lemm.ee.

Fortunately, #PieFed provides a way to migrate the posts in all the communities on it to somewhere else!

Socio-political musings...

I'm envisioning an onboarding website that encourages creators to publish into the #fediverse, and shows them how. With sections on how to publish different kinds of media;

* long form text, eg news articles and blogs

* images, eg event photos or webcomics

* podcasts

* videos

* livestreams

Each section could have a comparison table of all the software software that can currently publish that kind of media over AP, and maybe a shortlist of recommendations.

How the Farm Industry Spied on Animal Rights Activists and Pushed the FBI to Treat Them as Bioterrorists - wired.com/story/fbi-wmdd-dxe-a "For years, a powerful ‘#BigAg’ trade group served up information on activists to the FBI. Records reveal a decade-long effort to see the animal rights movement labeled a “bioterrorism” threat."
