LibreOffice losing support?

techrights.org/2023/06/06/patt

Looks like IBM has started cutting RedHat back, and there are going to be some casualties.

OTOH, LibreOffice financials for 2021 don't explicitly list IBM or RedHat.

“Why do you use Signal and all this Encryption!
Do you have anything to hide? 😡“

Yes! I do!

- The color of my underwear
- My friends’ cats photos
- My failed gym class grades
- My first attempt at "portrait"
- The outcome of my last meal
- The weird mole on my left toe
- How much I cried watching Star Trek
- How much cheese there is in my fridge
- My failed knitting experiment
- The horrible poem I just wrote
- My bank card pin number
- My social security number
- My main password
- The web search history for your birthday gift

Hello, this is a doozie. ATL cops are using paypal transaction data to charge a bail fund with money laundering for reimbursing gas and covid test buys. #StopCopCity

Data-hungry fintech apps like PayPal and Venmo are a threat to the mutual aid funds that use them. Seems pretty damn dire to build and defend alternatives to help keep front line activists, abortion patients, gender affirming care patients, and others safe.

Signal, but for $, please.

Dan @froomkin has an appropriately scathing piece about Big Journalism's ongoing and relentless normalization of extremists. They've taken over one of the two major political parties and cowed news organizations into treating them as a moral equivalent to non-extremists. presswatchers.org/2023/06/duri

Asheville Police "scheduled their clearing of the Aston Park encampment, which they knew to be controversial and of great public interest, for 10pm on Christmas night specifically to weaponize the curfew against reporters." ncnewsline.com/2023/06/02/lawy

"Stochastic parrot" doesn't sound nearly as exciting as "artificial intelligence," but it does have the great merit of actually being descriptive of the software.

RFK Jr. gets presidential endorsement from Jack Dorsey, so bye, bye Bluesky.

@leighelse I'm amazed with how many workers (especially those in tech) are blithely unaware that any IT services provided by a company are capable of being closely monitored.

Use your own accounts for your personal devices, and while at work, use your own network on your own devices for personal use. If you can't do that then limit what you do and don't be surprised at any bad outcomes.

This also applies to any free networks you encounter outside of home and work.

And they were very impressed by BigBlueButton.

I must say, though, I do have some concerns about a cyber-security firm that uses MS Teams. Ouch.

@GuerillaOntologist Heh. Of course, meaningless conversation is a highly valued social skill, and you always hope when you talk about something meaningful, the other party will listen and learn. Maybe "AI" does mirror life. >;->

Quote from above article 👆

"ChatGPT certainly can’t replace human thinking. Yet people project sentient qualities onto ChatGPT and feel like they are conducting meaningful conversations with another person. When they realize that’s a foolish claim, they say they’re sure that’s definitely coming soon!"

This dynamic (which reoccurs throughout our society) is how I know we live in the dumbest timeline.

@brunoc We all want the internet to be freed, but to act like it wasn't always capitalized is really exposing your privilege. There's always been monetary gates to access, whether we're talking about the cost of hookup, hardware, or software. There's always been predatory companies. What exists now is much freer than back in the 70s-90s, especially the opportunity to learn how to make it freer.

So I have confirmed that Morgan Freeman never said this, but
WE ALL CAN SAY IT!
I hate the word Homophobia
It's not a "phobia"
You are not scared
You're just a hateful asswipe

I've known @jorge for almost twenty years. He lives in the future. Every time he is excited about something new, first I would shrug, then a few years later I would find myself using it (and loving it). Finally I learned that if I want to know the future of Linux, I should listen to him.

So when Jorge writes a blog post describing the future of the Linux desktop, you should read it.

Amazing things happened in America the last time we taxed billionaires at 90%. It’s an incredible story that every American should know!

New proposed @USPTO rules will bring more bogus software patents. They're a big threat to open source developers. We're standing together with @linuxfoundation insisting on a "fair and open system" of patent reviews. linuxfoundation.org/blog/stand
