SCOTUS bribery

Good news. Indiana to drop ban on cameras in court.

Prediction: nothing bad will happen and the public will be better informed. All studies show that hypothetical harms from courtroom cameras never materialize. wrtv.com/news/delphi/wrtv-digi

Elsevier and other academic publishers have pivoted from oligopolistic publishers to researcher-surveillance vendors. They track everything you do and sell the analysis back to your employers.

It's about time that academics became more aware of this.

@ubersoft It seems that most of the carriers still offer a pretty basic flip phone, but they all have cameras.

Can someone recommend to me a cell phone that supports 4g and 5g but ISN'T a smartphone with apps -- I'm talking old school cellphone and texting only. I'd prefer one without a camera as well, but I figure that's pushing it.

English version:

"Hello all.
Clear names are irrelevant to the story for now.

On 10.02.2023, the SEK stormed the apartment of one of our collective members at 06.00 to collect evidence, according to the police. It is about a special serious crime. He allegedly wrote a tweet, which does not comply with the legal framework and rewards crimes. Apart from the disproportion of the employment as well as the psychological consequences for 3 further uninvolved ones, who were confronted with firearms, several humans, under it also uninvolved ones, a sleep mask over the eyes were pulled, as in a bad film around thereby further pressure to exercise...."

As previously noted, the UK's blocking of the blatantly anti-competitive Microsoft buyout of Activision was a great development. For much more context, read this wonderfully incendiary piece from @doctorow pluralistic.net/2023/04/27/con

Dwyane Wade and the toll of anti-trans rhetoric

Former Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade moved his family out of Florida because of the state’s increasing hostility to LGBTQ people — including Wade’s daughter, Zaya

That revelation emerged in an interview Wade gave reporter Rachel Nichols: “I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions,” Wade told Nichols

I'm not interested in having Fedi 'splained to me. I'm just saying why more Black folk are on BlueSky:

1. It should be almost impossible for a new, non-technical user to onboard onto the Fediverse and accidentally join a server where they will receive racist death threats.

2. It should not be possible for racists to reply to a Black user's post with hateful gore images, without other users on the server knowing it.

3. It should be easy for a new admin to default into a safe, general denylist.

Are there any #shotwell devs here in the #Fediverse? I'm wondering if anyone's working on 'publish to Peertub instance' functionality...

Another of my information streams on the subject of lithium is the #VisionZero #urbanists I follow here on Mastodon, who note that one of the many benefits of compact urban design, public transit, and a cultural focus on smaller lighter vehicles would be a dramatically smaller societal demand for lithium compared to a continued focus on individual ownership of midsized to large automobiles.

I just completed a thread about my reactions to an interview on PRX's _The World_ about how the Chilean government is trying to manage lithium extraction in the country.

The thread is meant for general consumption, but most of the posts in the thread are followers-only, in an attempt to evade scraping.

Periodic reminder: public corporations are the problem. They're not the solution. They're not even part of the solution. The solution is a world without them. That is the lesson we must take to heart.

Many of us are, often through no fault of our own, totally dependent on corporations. We need to break those dependencies as a top priority. Until then, we won't make much progress at making the world better.

Hot take on the U.S. presidential election

Bernie as Mr. Block. I lost a lot of faith in Bernie, when he didn't go 3rd party in 2016. Lost all faith when he did the same in 2020. Not surprised to see him supporting a Biden reelection; his message is 'trust in the system'.

The Mr. Block Democrats keep hoping for the next "New Deal Democrat" to replace the established Monty Hall Democrats (Let's Make A Deal Democrats).
