You know what really grinds my gears about American political discourse? So many people are so naive about how our system actually functions, and the amount of corruption and bribery that goes on at every level of government. So many people seem convinced that only the party they don't vote for is dirty. But guess what? That SC justice you love so much, who you hold in such high esteem - they are definitely taking bribes. No question.

Elsevier and other academic publishers have pivoted from oligopolistic publishers to researcher-surveillance vendors. They track everything you do and sell the analysis back to your employers.

It's about time that academics became more aware of this.

I'm not interested in having Fedi 'splained to me. I'm just saying why more Black folk are on BlueSky:

1. It should be almost impossible for a new, non-technical user to onboard onto the Fediverse and accidentally join a server where they will receive racist death threats.

2. It should not be possible for racists to reply to a Black user's post with hateful gore images, without other users on the server knowing it.

3. It should be easy for a new admin to default into a safe, general denylist.

Another of my information streams on the subject of lithium is the #VisionZero #urbanists I follow here on Mastodon, who note that one of the many benefits of compact urban design, public transit, and a cultural focus on smaller lighter vehicles would be a dramatically smaller societal demand for lithium compared to a continued focus on individual ownership of midsized to large automobiles.

I just completed a thread about my reactions to an interview on PRX's _The World_ about how the Chilean government is trying to manage lithium extraction in the country.

The thread is meant for general consumption, but most of the posts in the thread are followers-only, in an attempt to evade scraping.

Periodic reminder: public corporations are the problem. They're not the solution. They're not even part of the solution. The solution is a world without them. That is the lesson we must take to heart.

Many of us are, often through no fault of our own, totally dependent on corporations. We need to break those dependencies as a top priority. Until then, we won't make much progress at making the world better.

The fact that Bernie Sanders is endorsing Biden doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Progressives in the U.S. need to focus on local and state government, not to mention the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Better yet, work on engaging voters.

The kind of big change we want is never going to come from the top in this country.
