Corporations Are Spending a Ton to Stop Low-Wage Workers From Unionizing

"In 2021, the typical paycheck for a full-time union employee was $194 higher each week than that of a full-time nonunion employee, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics."

Hello @conservancy - been spending a bit of time in the WordPress (GPLv2+) plugin/theme ecosystem & am amazed how most have "pro/premium licenses" (they use that term) on their code *in addition to the required GPL license*. They're all 'open core' rather than FOSS, from what I can see, contravening the GPL with an additional license. Is this something you're already aware of? Am I right that its a widespread contravention of the GPL? If so, is anything being done to redress it?

@GuerillaOntologist I see this too on a different hosting provider. Mail doesn't even show up on the web mail access for 5-10 minutes. I have antivirus, SpamAssassin, and email filtering enabled at the server. Wondered if any of those are the bottleneck.

@lightweight "Affected people" in climate change scenarios tends to disproportionately be the poor, and poor people suffering has never been real enough to the rich to effect change.

I expect the Fed to continue to crash the US economy. There'll soon be blood on the pickle ball courts as citizens are unable to contain their rage.

@lightweight If you have a FOSS project that you don't want to self host then @codeberg@mastodon.technology looks like a good choice.

The migration to @gitea from gitlab was one of the best decisions! Using push syncs I can also keep all my public repositories at gitlab up to date while using gitea as single source of truth. The teams feature is really helpful too! And the UI is so fast and snappy! Thanks #gitea

This is coolish...

But it troubles me that the Venture Capitalist site promoting this is Squarespace... Shows the inherent disconnect between people doing things for the right reason, and the people who, for their own self-interest, enable them to do so, diluting the ethics, and tending towards apologist open-washing.

I'm increasingly of the view that large publicly listed corporations (usually how VCs made their C) are incompatible with good ethics.

@lightweight the percentage of software companies that can reliably measure their software development effort is very, very low, therefore the state of software development is an inability to predict quality. Until the software community (devs and management) accepts metrics and measurement as an integral piece of the development process, this will continue to be true. Software is science, but software development ignores the scientific method.

My current fandom: laughing at the pratfalls, mishaps, and elegant catastrophes in The Goes Wrong Show, a farcical British show whose first season is streaming free in the US. harihareswara.net/posts/2022/t

Corporations’ Price-Gouging May Hurt Them in the Long Run, Says Economist
truthout.org/audio/corporation

"And so what that means is that for every dollar that these corporations are earning, a larger percentage of that is going to corporate profits, rather than paying off input costs or paying wages, than what we’ve seen since the 1950s. So not only are corporations making a lot of money, they’re actually squeezing consumers for more than they have in 70 years. "

This summer, IGD turned 7! As things heat up again on the streets - we're more excited than ever to continue to be an engaging autonomous media platform. We're also in a crisis + need to raise $2k by the end of the month to continue. Help us meet our goal! itsgoingdown.org/igd-turns-7-c

"Far from reducing extreme poverty, the expansion of capitalism was associated with a dramatic deterioration in human welfare."

phys.org/news/2022-09-expansio

Once you realize that GDP can rise at the same time as deteriorating access to essential goods because commons-based and household production isn't as legible to econometrics as being forced to buy essential goods you used to be able to provide for yourself from a corporation is, this shouldn't be surprising at all.
