Thomas: "...[P]laying copyrighted music as a deterrent to the First Amendment-guaranteed right to openly film police is, if not BHPD official protocol, at least a technique that has been deployed by more than one officer."

Back in 2019, anti-racist activists experimented with playing copyrighted music at Nazi rallies to make them unpostable on social media. At the time, I warned that this would end badly.

Why did I get into software development? I had fun doing it.

Why am I considering getting out of software development? It's become just a job.

@jamesvasile "it doesn't take that much to switch" :-(

I saw a similar program at a previous job targeting electrical/mechanical engineers that had mixed results. The employer would have never gone in the opposite direction. It's the "anyone can program!" attitude that I find offensive. It's the infinite monkey theorem without the Shakespeare qualifier. I think it is good to encourage people to try to attain any skill they want, with the expectation of encountering much failure.

Sometimes software developers have the worst understanding of what software development entails.

Practitioners of a skill set should help people who are interested in that skill set to get started, but we should also recognize when we should steer them in a different direction. All skills don't belong to all people.

@jamesvasile Ever wonder why we never see similar posts about being a physicist, electrical engineer, or doctor? Ever wonder what it says these posts are saying about software development? Ever wonder why managers think all software developers are fungible?

Has anyone had experience implementing Shleepay? github.com/shleeable/shleepay It's a Docker-supporting fork of Drew Devault's Fosspay open source patronage/micropayment app (uses Stripe to accept one off and repeating payments)... thinking I might fire up an instance as a live demo for tonight's NZ-based FOSS meetup. What could possibly go wrong?

Out of interest, are there any representatives of the Software Freedom Law Center on the Fediverse? Given that this flagrant violation (i.e. relicensing) of the GPL in the WordPress marketplace is more the rule than the exception, I'm wondering if anyone else has taken issue with it previously - what's the precedent?

Just dashed off a quick email to one of the thousands of WordPress plugin/theme mills that's trying to force users to buy "premium" licenses for their plugins. I suggested that their entire business model is a flagrant violation of the GPL under which WordPress and its dependencies (all plugins and themes) is licensed. See gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/ section 4-6 for starters. We need to help these folks understand the licenses they've implicitly accepted and professional violate every day.

Everywhere on social media I see US "conservatives" throwing shade on "leftist" viewpoints... I think to myself: if you replace the term leftist with it really means, "compassionate, informed, & rational", then I can see why they're feeling aggrieved, with their flaws being pointed out like that.

They should outlaw K-cups, et al, or at least require manufacturers to have a viable (i.e., easy as throwing in the trash can) recycling infrastructure in place in order to sell these one-use-disposable items.

Analysis of the decline of social democracy focuses too much on policies and not enough on organising methods.

The analysis of organising methods focuses too much on unions and not enough on the equally important role that cooperative and mutual businesses used to play.

The three pillars of Labour organising, that were most successfully implemented in the Nordic countries consisted of organising:

- Workers into unions
- Consumers into cooperatives
- Voters into social democratic parties
