One thing that is too often missing from COVID-19 (and other natural disaster) discussions is . The difficult question is how to factor fairness into human ecology discussions. The state of the world right now means the rich get to decide who should be culled from the population.

The key to creating software that is easy to understand and maintain is to clearly define and encapsulate the functional and non-functional subject matters in your system under development. I was first exposed to this concept about 28 years ago, and the method for doing it was already quite mature at that time.

@lightweight To be fair, Microsoft isn't unlike other companies in this regard. Most of the software in the world is overly complex and hard to maintain. OTOH, Microsoft has added extra complexity in anticompete measures, and its closed source nature makes for less opportunities for refactoring and less avenues to improvement.

Like most capitalistic software companies, quality and security come second to cost and marketing concerns (and corporate ego massaging).

It's unfriendly to developers who want to take away other people's rights. That's a feature, not a bug.

I mean, you might as well argue that commercial software licenses are unfriendly to developers. After all, they don't let you sell copies of the software as part of your own bundles.
