In a new study, researchers demonstrate a real world method of teaching kids to think critically in order to protect them from the pseudoscience-to-alt-right-violence pipeline https://skepchick.org/2024/09/study-we-can-and-must-teach-kids-to-think-critically/
The framing on this story is wild. Summary: as a deadly fungal epidemic in bats spread across the US, increased insect activity resulted in an average 31% increase in pesticide use by local farmers, resulting in an average 8% increase in human infant mortality in affected areas.
And the message is: bats provide important economic benefits.
And yes, very true.
But also: The correlation between pesticide use & infant mortality is that well known & it's still allowed???

Millions of American youth face the dystopia of surveillance software installed on school-issued machines. School surveillance companies sacrifice the rights of students for unproven claims of keeping them safe. Students deserve better. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/09/school-monitoring-software-sacrifices-student-privacy-unproven-promises-safety
Yes. I'll even respond to the religions who think they're not necessarily religious. If you hold your athiest/humanist meetings at the UU church, don't expect me to attend.

I talked with AIPT Comics about writing a new Toxic Avenger series, my love of mutants, and reviving a Troma property in 2024.

Someone sent me a note the other day that a funeral service for their late friend was being used to start a new Meta group that claimed to offer live streaming of the service.
But of course, those who clicked the link were sent to fake video streaming websites that try to collect payment information before supposedly letting you watch the service.
A little diggging show that not only are there hundreds of these fake funeral streaming groups, but all of them are tied back to some brainiacs in Bangladesh who naturally exposed their identities and operation by trojaning their own PCs.
What's crazy is how the fake funeral streaming groups on Meta are just one tiny microcosm of the scams these dudes in Bangladesh are doing.
Also, now I feel like showering after spending a few hours back on Meta. Eww.

@dangillmor On Debian, I've seen apps that have a browser setting in a /etc or /home/<user>/.config (or .local/share) file, but they are mostly command line apps. Handy if you want to override the default for a specific app.
@jnl What if you don't want your life to matter? Are you free to be such a person?
@didgebaba I just read about an indigenous nation in Brasil that sings a song that describes and names 33 types of native bees which are now being classified.
Watching people on the 'tech-in-school' list I'm lurking on fretting migrating away from one proprietary dependence (VMWare) to another (Proxmox VE) talking about license costs going from $700/yr to $5800/yr. Why don't these people see that they're just perpetuating their unhealthy dependence on profit-motivated badness. They don't seem to have much technical confidence.
