We all agree that the SEC's “gag rule” is an egregious violation of the First Amendment, writes Seth Stern.

When I talk about capitalism collapsing under the weight of the climate catastrophe, I mean things like this:

“Insurers providing policies to homeowners were hit with a $15.2 billion net underwriting loss last year, according to figures from rating agency AM Best, saying that the figure was the worst since at least 2000 and more than double the losses since the previous year.”

Iris Meredith is a reader that reached out months ago about how job negotiations mysteriously break down the moment employers realize she is trans.

She's now choosing violence, has started a consultancy that does software/DEI work, and just dropped this bomb that will probably get her banned from LinkedIn.

I suspect many here will appreciate it or find it thought-provoking. I've never had a trans colleague despite all my employers paying lip service 24/7.

A new #Louisiana law goes into effect Thursday that will make it a misdemeanor for anyone, including #journalists, to be within 25 feet of a #police officer if the officer orders them back.

🧵 I've spent this year writing for the @newrepublic about how a group of Silicon Valley billionaires has gone WEIRD. Now their weirdness is mating up with Trump's MAGA weirdness in the 2024 election.
Here's a few things to understand about these guys:

Come work with me! I'm looking for a Product Security Engineer to join my incredibly talented security assurance team. We sit in the middle of the entire technology stack, and you'd be working among the very best security engineers on an incredibly important (and very interesting!) mission: securing autonomous freight vehicles.

You can find all the details (including how to apply) on our careers page:

I've been hosting #NextCloud @Hetzner_Online for a year now, and I just rescaled my server with twice the shared vCPUs, RAM & storage for the same €3.89 per month. Folks, #MooresLaw is not dead!

So over on RNZ, Peter Griffin is downplaying the danger (or need to change the status quo) of complete reliance on Microsoft (and its architecturally flawed monoculture)...

Capitalism's greatest trick was stealing so much of our time that we cannot imagine living without the 'conveniences' it sells back to us.

Nice concise look at what "weird" means in practical #politics, both conceptually and in terms of where the core of the (US) parties are right now: threadreaderapp.com/thread/181

@jducoeur Interesting that the author would blame the GOP's shift to "weird" on Trump, because the shift had to be completed to get Trump. The gate to "weird" really opened when Reagan won by large margins. Nixon's Southern Strategy push showed that the right's "weird" was waiting just outside, but Reagan is really the catalyst. He also pulled the Dems away from "weird". Laying McGovern to rest with the War on Drugs and hawkish "defense" and Carter's environmental to rest with Watt.

What's wrong with the NZ Health System? rnz.co.nz/news/national/523686 It's been purposely underfunded by a gov't working for the interests of the wealthiest and corporations, and is dead set on privatising all of NZ's public wealth and institutions.

Jenny, Harah, & Leroy on the farm. We spent the morning hoeing, trellising, and harvesting.

And talking: water use and development, books we are reading, commons vs markets, insects, weeds, and more.

Our poetry reading included Billy Collins, Langston Hughes, Rumi, an anonymous blogger, medieval Japanese Haiku, and a song Emma's grandmother wrote about well water contaminated by a dead rabbit.

Will told us that #farm_club work is freeing up time to experiment with regenerative approaches.
