🏴PROTEST TMRW IS STILL ON🏴

👉The tenants' union has received confirmation that the encampment eviction tmrw has been postponed thanks to the overwhelming public response.

Even with a postponed eviction, we will be going forward with a militant 9am protest. Postponened or not, we need total confirmation that campers will NOT be evicted ANYTIME in the future and that they will receive the services they need. We have received the encouragement of Resilience to make this decision.

We ask that people countinue to show support and to help coordinate a response by showing up tnight at the site of the encampment, 7:30pm, and showing up before the protest tmrw to check in on campers.

We will not allow the government to postpone the eviction so that a future eviction can have a more coordinated and heavy police response. We will also not allow public backlash to fizzle out. We're gonna keep up the pressure.✊️

A discussion about distributed federated systems else-network did bring up some concerning history that we should keep in mind:

#XMPP was, briefly, the dominant messaging system on the Internet. It was fully federated allowing hosting anywhere. Major extensions were being done by major companies (Apple adding voice and video for example). And it all fell apart because the three big providers (Apple, Google, Facebook) ditched it to have more control.

In the case of journalists who were put off by having been blocked for not CW'ing political posts, one thing I think that needs to be emphasized is that Mastodon is not one single community. Different instances and cross-instance social networks have different norms.

Just because one instance blocks your toots does not mean that Mastodon as a whole isn't interested in them.
