The things our politicians (and, dutifully, our media) refer to as "Free Trade Agreements" (FTAs) have nothing to do with 'freeing' trade. They consist of hundreds or thousands of pages of *new* trade restrictions. They the antithesis of "FTAs". And, as ever, they exist not to benefit the government's constituents, they exist to benefit corporate interests, based entirely on an implicit (but entirely wrong) belief in "trickle down economics". Which, for those who missed the memo, is not a thing.

Further disappointing but not surprising to see the rather toothless "Copenhagen Pledge" coming out of this event at https://techfordemocracy.dk/join-the-initiative/ that has a lot of warm fuzzy words, but doesn't actually bother to say what kinds of technology are encouraged or discouraged.

Kind of like "be excellent to each other" codes of conduct that don't define bad behavior.

Stark contrast to good work like the "Declaration of #DigitalAutonomy" developed by @o0karen0o @mdb and others.

For all my gripes about the brokenness of the international development system, today's a good day. I was fortunate to be able to lead a workshop of 30+ people working at funding agencies/donors. Coming out of #COP26 discussing how to band together to make progress on #climate action using technology -- hopefully in responsible & ethical ways.

Lots of good lightning talks and productive breakout groups discussing how to build partnerships & synergy to respond to the giant challenges ahead.

I'd appreciate some time chatting with someone who thinks that licenses inspired by open source licenses, but with restrictions on use (e.g do no evil licenses) are the best and most effective way to handle people doing evil things with software.

It's great to see a few gov'ts (e.g. the EU) starting to realise how much they've undermined their own sovereignty and stunted their local industries by adopting Microsoft (and, to a lesser extent, Google/Amazon/Apple/Facebook) software and services. They've only just started to realise that they've outsourced their most business-critical systems to a potentially hostile party, and in doing so, they've condemned their institutions, and the people dependent on them, to exploitation.

Anybody know any #WorkerCoop developers/TA providers in South Carolina? Going to be talking with some members of a nascent intermodal trucking co-op later today and looking for some ppl in their area to direct them to.
