Teppo Rämä gave a terrific presentation on marine fungi yesterday (he's a mycologist specialising in arctic marine fungi).

I was amazed to learn that there are fungi which parasitise diatoms! There are also marine fungal species which have demonstrated the capacity to degrade polyethylene microplastics.

He shared a slide which showed a massive increase in fungal activity following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill; very interesting from a bioremediation perspective.

The definitive CO2/CH4 comparison post realclimate.org/index.php/arch

Ahead of the Glasgow climate summit Biden and EPA emphasis reducing atmospheric methane. Leading to many bad comparisons between CO2 and methane in the press. This post gives the most relevant science needed for an honest comparison. 1/2

Of course, pledging allegiance to any branding based on perceived popularity is not very punk, so a lot of younger punks must have started life as "Chickenshit Conformists" (to quote the DKs).

I had kind of gotten out of the local "scene" while the kids were young, and when I did, I was surprised by all the PBR. Back in the 80s, we were just drinking what were could steal from our dads. Generic beer was really more prevalent than PBR, and PBR wasn't any more prevalent than other domestics in the same price range. The PBR craze didn't make sense to me. (And not just because it tastes like shit.)

Rumor of Pabst Blue Ribbon as the "punk" beer seems to have been started as a marketing campaign targeting hipsters. Side eye to all the younger punks in town drinking PBR.

The trouble with giving to organizations is the endless stream of spam you receive in return. It even goes so far as to push you to give after death.

Work opportunity: anyone interested in part-time work developing e-commerce and direct marketing for an organic farm that sells a lot of seed? Open Food Network could be the platform...

I am VERY happy and proud to announce the public release of the "OpenBSD Webzine" !

Hat tip to @craigmaloney and @bortzmeyer

When people talk about travelling to the past, they worry about radically changing the present by doing something small, but barely anyone in the present really thinks that they can radically change the future by doing something small.

@lightweight @fc it's a new usage paradigm, which means it's not the new generation's ignorance; it's ours. This was the approximate conclusion in the linked source article.

At some point, the search for the "blue shirt" in the laundry pile will yield an unwieldy number of results, and some other paradigm will take over. Maybe folders, maybe not.

School administrators, parents, and students may be happy to learn that an “edtech” company has signed the “Student Privacy Pledge.” But there is a disconnect between what one might expect when reading the Pledge & what companies must do to comply with it.

@GuerillaOntologist the immediately following paragraphs are much more revealing as they talk about how everyone having a voice can bog down the decision making process. i.e., you need leaders with more power. Didn't read further to see if he takes it to the next level of "unwashed masses". ;-)

To the top 1%, $5 billion (USD) represents 0.0044% of the worlds wealth that they possess. Somehow I don't think that's necessarily praise worthy given that they are mostly responsible for the issue.

@liaizon @ephemeral @Anke libraries and parks are "public spaces", but they are somewhat distinct from other government owned "public spaces". e.g., government office buildings. They also are distinct from "community spaces", which aren't government owned. Hmm...
