So, I was getting a bunch of segfaults on an application... running in Python

Achievement unlocked!

The tinysubversions bot had a server issue and lost all the RSS feeds. I'm trying to decide if I should set them up again, fork the code and point to my own servers, or just use an RSS reader instead of Mastodon.

You have to remember that all the calls for personal responsibility with respect to climate change are too little. This doesn't mean stop, but it does mean that the effort is better spent in action that results in big governmental change.

Did a search for 'dead net'. Big mistake. Fucking Grateful Dead all over my screen.

All RSS feeds seem dead today. Did mastodon add a feature?

Bar is playing Beatles Spotify. Kill me now.

@byllgrim@mastodon.xyz Badly organized source code is cancer, because cruft starts taking over your system as you kludge together fixes for the poor organization. Soon even the good parts of the software become unrecognizable.

Woe are you, if it ships, because then the business will conclude that it is "working software", and it will live forever!

@JackieLibre MS Office is so horrible. If it wasn't for Microsoft's anticompetitive monopoly, it would have never beaten the much better alternatives available in the 80s-90s.

Disappearing Peruvian glaciers

It is common knowledge that glaciers are melting in most areas across the globe. The speed at which tropical glaciers in the Peruvian Andes are retreating is particularly alarming, however. In the first detailed investigation of all Peruvian mountain ranges, a research team has ascertained a drastic reduction of almost 30 percent in the area covered by glaciers between 2000 and 2016.

This story was originally published by Wired and appears here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. Stipulated: A nuclear war would be real bad. But, like, how bad, exactly? What if it wasn’t all-out, the United States and Russia throwing thousands of warheads at each other, but instead something more limited? Longtime adversaries India […]

“It’s nearly impossible to fire a federal worker,” acting White House chief of staff and budget chief Mick Mulvaney told the audience at a South Carolina Republicans’ dinner in August. “I know that because a lot of them work for me, and I’ve tried. You can’t do it.” But Mulvaney reassured his audience that the […]

Many technologies suffer at the gate of misuse and silver bullet dreams. OO arose from the ashes of functional programming, and in 30 years will probably do so again.

Shlaer-Mellor did it right, but good abstraction was too hard for the average developer. Fools follow fools.

Roughing the passer call in Bears game today shows just how ridiculous these protection penalties have gotten.
