@lightweight Whoever wrote that is younger than 40 and not interested in researching the history, or willfully chose to ignore all that came before (and during) Microsoft's rise. I found this sentence quite laughable, "Markdown helps users concentrate on content rather than appearance, promoting clarity, readability, and thoughtful writing." What are you using any type of mark down/up, if you aren't concentrating on appearance?
Plenty of other free mark stuff way before markup.
@lwriemen those are fair points... although regarding appearance, I think the author is perhaps referring to semantics as opposed to frivolities like font, size, colour, padding, etc.
