I agree with this idea of training the next generation of white collar tech workers with apprenticeships like the trades.

What made me most effective in my career wasn't learned in my CS classes, but instead in on-the-job training under more experienced mentors.

@kyle When I started out in engineering after college, this was called, "mentoring"; large employers often had defined mentoring structures in place. Smaller companies didn't have the overhead for it, but you usually worked adjacent to someone with experience.
