I just learned of an unfortunate and counterintuitive situation in which Mastodon/Hubzilla federation can fail. Details under CW. (231 words) 

@Mike Macgirvin 🖥️, I'm curious if you would see the above Mastodon/Hubzilla behavior as a bug, and if so whether it carries over into (streams).  

It seems to me to be a fundamentally tricky aspect of handling cross-platform federation where different platforms have different models for how conversations work, and I'm not sure whether a good generalizeable solution can exist.

@dynamic @mikedev It seems to me that the originator of a thread/conversation should "own" that thread, such that if they delete the thread, then all posts attached are also deleted from all servers. This should be the same for all user owned items, individual posts, accounts, etc. This should also extend into archives/backups. Servers that fail to comply should be sanctioned.
