So I upgraded my OS yesterday and it came with a newer version of the plasma desktop (which I love), but I have discovered one issue which is really bugging me (and a lot of other people too, if the forums are to be trusted) which is that for some reason, the cursor theme does not stay consistent across apps. After changing the cursor theme, I notice the new theme only works on some apps, but reverts to the default style on others. It seems like this is about app-types not playing well together.

This is way more annoying to me than it probably should be, but it also shows another reason why linux desktop has a hard time getting mass adoption. While by and large it looks and works great, there are some things like this that, while minor seeming, really make the system feel like it's not well put together. It's hard enough to convince someone to switch to Linux w/out having to also trying to explain away "little" quirks like this one.

Like, are Linux developers allergic to standardization, or what?

@GuerillaOntologist How much do you believe in anarchy? >;->

Linux users can go on for days on why they use Fedora vs Debian, and then introduce all the tangents on window managers and compositors and ...

Choices are a draw of the OS; just as lack of choices drive people away from Windows and Mac.

@lwriemen
Yeah, yeah. But the problem is that this insistence on doing things a hundred different ways means that I am now FORCED to use the default cursor theme, rather than my beloved Adwaita. This is a crime against humanity I tell ya! I use Plasma because I want to customize everything, but I can't do that if app devs refuse to agree on how to make that happen. Their freedom is interfering with my own which is pretty much the definition of injustice (i.e. me being inconvenienced).

@lwriemen Kidding aside though, I love my linux desktop and much prefer its minor hiccups to MS's full scale assault on all that's holy. In fact, I think it's probably time to make a round of donations to the MX and KDE teams in appreciation for all the hard work.
