Fun facts:
you own the data on your electric meter.
Until only a few years ago, inexpensive recording meter readers were available (e.g., black & decker EM100B). Non-hard-wired meter readers are no longer commercially available. But there’s an easy, low-cost, scalable hack to get your data. Your data is worth money, & others profit from your data.
That might be why they discontinued meter readers. We are piloting a ratepayer collective where we get/wield our own data, in concerted fashion.

@Nathanpboston Why should there be data on the meters? The mechanical meters were accurate enough for home owner billing. Smart meters are driven by large industry where tiny inefficiencies can cost large amounts of money. The meter sellers don't want to make too many different meters for economy of scale. Tamper is easier with mechanical, but it is an almost impossible problem to detect with smart meters. Prepay is possib le with smart meters but has no real benefit to the user.
