On the whole Threads.net / Facebook / Meta debacle, the question has been raises of whether defederation from Threads.net should take the form of Limit or Suspend.

I think Suspend is the right answer, and am actually not sure that "Limit" counts as defederation at all.

My thinking on Limit vs. Suspend:

Limit does almost nothing to prevent interconnections between the two servers, mostly only changing the aesthetic experience of Fedi users. In particular allows Threads.net users would still be able to follow social.coop users who haven't set up following by permission only, and thereby give Threads.net access to followers-only posts and other locked information. Thus Limit requires positive action by users wishing to protect themselves.

When assessing the best course of action regarding corporate fediverse instances (not just Threads.net), I think it's extremely important to think about the implications for less-active Fedi users and Fedi users with defunct or stagnant accounts.

Up until now, Fedi has been special in that you could be reasonably confident that "Followers only" content was only being received by actual humans, *even if you don't require permission for following*.

@dynamic Hmm. I feel like I've been blocking bots and sock puppets for a while now.

@lwriemen

My concern here isn't bots and sock puppets, but real users that we might actually want to interact with, but who happen to be on surveillance platforms.
