Does a #federated alternative to #StackExchange exist? If so, how does it measure up?

If not, what are your thoughts on what it would take to create one? Could it be done on #ActivityPub, or would it require a different protocol?

(boosts welcome, as is generally true of public posts)

@dynamic Newsgroups, IFC, and various forums existed long before Stack Overflow. Matrix has stepped into this role as well. Not sure why anyone thinks we need something else. Maybe its because of search engine preferences, which are bought by the corporated Q&A sites?

@lwriemen

StackExchange has a very particular structure for encouraging engagement and producing distributed moderation. I don't like that it's a private company, but if something like that could be replicated in a genuinely democratic context, it would provide things that newsgroups and forums do not provide.

@lwriemen

Matrix is designed for realtime communication, and (like Discord) is really not an ideal for providing technical support (not withstanding the number of software projects that *only* use Discord for tech support).
