I worked in a nursing home about 18 years ago, and even then, when they had no problem filling positions, the place was still "chronically understaffed." On the weekends, some residents had unanswered call lights on for half an hour or more before someone could check on them. The status quo ante was already bad, now it's even worse. 😡

And the solution is NOT to bring in foreign workers who are willing to work for high school level wages. The solution is to pay healthcare workers commensurately with the importance and difficulty of their profession. Do that FIRST, and if we still can't find enough people, then bring in folks from other countries -- and then pay them a fair wage too!

@GuerillaOntologist Wouldn't it be wonderful, if wages were based on benefit to society rather than ability to generate profit?

@lwriemen Indeed. But trust me, that work generates plenty of profit...it's just that none of it makes it to the actual workers.
