Whole Foods keeps reducing the checkout staff. The obvious goal is training customers to a) check ourselves out, every though it takes longer, and b) save money for Amazon.
Used to be more pleasant than this.

@dangillmor My wife likes any social interaction, so she prefers a cashier. I would rather avoid the social interaction, so I prefer self checkout. However, I'd trade self checkout in a heartbeat to have the corner supermarket/drugstore/hardware back.
