Interesting.

:opensource: #OpenSource Initiative #OSI using a proprietary issue tracker software for its new website.

Gotta appease those sweet sweet corporate sponsors, I guess. Even when said sponsors are selling proprietary software.

@downey But GitHub is what everyone uses! It is what is easy for people! /s

@alcinnz Yes, driving a gas-powered car is easier than fighting for clean air alternatives, but you won't find Greenpeace forcing everyone to pollute in order to support their work.

@downey @alcinnz This is a digression, but you may be surprised how often I've had to drive (or ride in) gas-powered cars while engaging in climate justice activism. Low carbon transportation was generally not a priority for the people planning the actions I was involved in. This was at least as frustrating to me as FOSS projects using GitHub ;-)

Lately I've taken a hard line and I no longer intend to participate in actions where I may be forced to use cars.

@skyfaller

💯 ... hypocrisy among so-called community "leaders" sadly remains common, often because said people are not so much driven by actually working toward change, but rather simply toward their next paycheck.

If you want to find people who actually care about the cause, you generally won't find them "at the top".

@alcinnz

@downey bingo. See also my thread on TechSoup: mastodon.nzoss.nz/@lightweight most organisations are mostly focused not on what they *say* they're focused on. They're mostly focused on preserving their powerbase and sphere of influence, and will alter their mission to support that (explicitly if they're honest, but often not, thus becoming a faux-parody of what they claim to be.). @skyfaller @alcinnz

@lightweight @skyfaller @alcinnz

💯 -- and that ship has sailed for OSI several years ago.

@downey yes, I haven't completely given up on them yet, as I have on the Linux Foundation, but I'm certainly very sceptical these days. I'm not an ally of 'open source' except to the extent that it's used by many when they mean Free Software, and I accept their passion if not correctness in terminology. @skyfaller @alcinnz

@lightweight @downey @skyfaller I appreciate the dev work they do! But I can't defend them as an organization or the effect that (especially their marketing team) has on their product. Or the cringey blogposts they write.

They have a vital role I want them to continue filling!

@alcinnz @lightweight @downey @skyfaller I have not given up on the OSI either.

Unfortunately I think that @downey's "call out" does harm toward a charity that actually has a governance structure that gives individual members a voice.

I do not see any actions that are designed to "appease" corporate sponsors (who do not get a voice in governance for their gifts).

@msw @lightweight @downey @skyfaller Yeah, all I'm seeing as a clash in tactics...

I may not agree with OSI's tactics here but I can respect them.

@msw @lwriemen @lightweight @downey @skyfaller I shun TechRights since their distrust of corporate influence goes to ludicrous extremes. To the extent they lump elementary LLC, who by absolutely no means qualifies as such, in with the major corporate players trying to "take over Linux".

It is opinions like their's that I am characterizing when I use the term "fossbro", to avoid naming names.

@alcinnz @msw @lightweight @downey @skyfaller I take with a grain of salt, but they often include a lot of investigative data. You just have to sort fact from opinion.

@lwriemen yes - Roy is sometimes a bit shrill, but he's pretty good about citing his sources and while I don't always agree with his conclusions, I have been grateful of his extensive investigation and the sources he provides so I can draw my own. @alcinnz @msw @downey @skyfaller

@alcinnz I try to avoid those sorts of depersonalising labels, as they load a lot of pejorative innuendo (much of which isn't understood by everyone) and a lot of unwarranted by-catch. @msw @lwriemen @downey @skyfaller

@lightweight @msw @lwriemen @downey @skyfaller I find this one useful as a means to diagnose a problem in our communities, but I do agree I should avoid applying it to specific individuals, sites, etc. Which I failed to handle to hold myself to this time.

@msw I've never looked at InfoWars. Had to look at your link to see what it is. Here in Aotearoa (NZ), Alex Jones is generally laughed at for being a fuckwit... I would say that comparing Roy with Alex is quite unfair, and it's particularly unfair to imply Roy (TechRights) is 'right wing'... I'd say he's the polar opposite of that - he's more progressive and anti-establishment than just about anyone I've ever come across. @lwriemen @alcinnz @downey @skyfaller

@lightweight @lwriemen @alcinnz @downey @skyfaller I wasn't intending to imply political ideology, only that extremism, sensationalism, personal attacks, and conspiracy theories seem part of the content strategy for the two websites (from my perspective).

I think that such approaches do not positively contribute to society, and are largely ineffective ways to advocate for change or ideas.

@msw you might be right... but there's another school of thought which suggests that people far out on the fringe push up the top end of the Overton Window - not high enough to include their views, but high enough that others with (slightly) less extreme end up looking safely moderate. Those fringe folks can do a LOT to change the playing field. @lwriemen @alcinnz @downey @skyfaller
