My spouse and I are playing this fun gambling game that my employer runs every November. She's got a spreadsheet going with different scenarios, expected value, and various strategies we can use. We're spending lots of time thinking about it and discussing how best to play it because if we guess wrong we could be out hundreds of thousands of dollars; if we guess right, we'll only be out about $10,000. Best possible case is being $3k in the hole.

(The game is called "health insurance open enrollment".)

@varx Sadly this game is not fun for me: I need the most expensive family plan, without question, every year. Whatever it is. That one.

@ocdtrekkie Oh wait, did I say "fun"? I meant to type "awful". (The keys are right next to each other.)

@varx What isn't fun on making bets on what horrible illnesses or injuries will befall your loved ones next year?

The only reason it isn't fun for me, is I know conclusively we'll hit the out of pocket max no matter what, so I want the lowest one possible.

@ocdtrekkie @varx Ouch! I was in that boat as well for a number of years. Now I feel lucky my employer still offers a so-called low deductible plan (i.e., most expensive monthly), because all the high deductible plans require hitting the deductible before pharmacy costs are reduced, and I have two household members that require expensive medicines.
