Wow, our NZ district health boards (DHBs) have proven remarkable inept at managing IT... rnz.co.nz/news/national/443364 and the worst thing: they're outsourcing more and more to overseas multinationals. It's only going to increase costs and the difficulty of attracting competent IT people (the levels of competence are already worryingly low, and the frustration of poorly served DHB staff running high). IT is meant to enable, not hold back, an organisation!

@lightweight IT has become just another cost center to subject to budget cuts and privatization.

@lwriemen yup - although I suspect that a few high-profile politicians (especially in the opposition) are thinking things need to change. We need to have embarrassed policy makers and their gov't champions, who then have a real incentive to make serious changes, and consider major culture changes within our institutions. That's what's required.

@lwriemen unfortunately, it's now become abundantly clear that IT decisions affect every single aspect of, for example, NZ's health care system (a major segment of which is currently in the throes of a major unrecoverable ransomware attack) . The status quo is a broad and comprehensive failure. It 's been unfit for purpose for a generation, and good people leave because of the crushing legacy (& inertia) of horrible past decisions, e.g. outsourcing & Microsoft everywhere. Total disaster.
