I try to avoid voice and video calls at all costs but are there viable (as in simple , multiplatform and reliable) open-source video calling apps nowadays ?

@santiago While not open source, Discord is multi-platform, has good video quality, and isn't owned by a huge tech company. It is what I use for this sort of thing personally.
If open source is a hard requirement, I might suggest looking into #matrix and #jami . That being said I haven't used either of those for videoconferencing before, so I won't vouch for their quality. Best of luck!
