Day 20z Everybody’s back from quarantine now, but that doesn’t mean we are done with covid. Post-viral fatigue is here, as is sleep deprivation from a combo of holidays, storms, and sickness in general. I’m glad everyone’s testing negative now but this still sucks ass.

Can’t wait to lose a month once a year to this shit. Prior to covid, every year since having kids, we’d lose 2 weeks to norovirus, maybe a month to colds, and if we have exceptional luck, some other virus like hand-foot-mouth. If I went to conferences, it’d be 1 week to conlung and possibly 3 months to post-vital bronchial congestion. Y’all wanna make this normal and it’s fucked up.

This was at least a good lesson for me that no matter what my choices are, I can’t really do much to keep my kids safe. I need to figure out how that changes my approach to parenting and life, though. I do harbor a much stronger default distaste for just about everyone, and I’m re-evaluating why I freely contribute knowledge and labor to things like open source when the world is just so openly violent in so many ways. What’s the point? There’s no community, and it’s everyone for themselves.

@whack Our society has spent decades teaching people to nurture their self-interest. It is now core to our culture. There is the obvious consumer side of it, but also the subtler good-intentioned focus on self-esteem/self-care, even though people naturally are selfish and need cultural prodding to resist that urge.

That said, I do see evidence the pendulum is swinging toward focus on the good of the group vs. the self, but it might take time (generations?) for that to take hold.
