When you write a No Starch Press book you have three choices of software: Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, or LaTeX. The book I'm writing is cross-platform (you can follow along if you're running Windows, macOS, or Linux), so I opted for LibreOffice, allowing me to write from any OS.

But omg LibreOffice bugs are so frustrating. I can handle the clunkyness but I wish it wasn't constantly crashing. In particular, the latest version of LibreOffice Writer on macOS Ventura, on Apple Silicon Mac, crashes multiple times a day. If I open two LibreOffice docs at the same time and try switching between the two, it crashes and I have to force quite the whole thing and hope I didn't lose too much work. It's like trying to write a paper in 2002.

@micahflee Yeah the formatting macros across all publishers tend to push the limits of word processing software. Formatting always slows me down so I separate writing from formatting.

All of my books were actually written in vim. I'd put basic markup in the document if it made sense (first html then later on markdown), then after I felt I had a good first draft of a chapter, only then would I import into the publisher's template and format it.
