@yaelwrites Super interesting (and unfortunate)! I always suspected that might be the case but never knew for sure (and was never high profile enough myself to experience it).
@yaelwrites Yeah maybe sexism is more a factor. I have a small level of (possibly waning) name recognition in a particular community because of my books and Linux Journal column but it is mostly positive.
@kyle well you’ve also given some 💯 talks!!! (I think my experience with that community has been more negative, but it’s for other reasons.)
@yaelwrites How kind of you to say! Wow, remember talks? That seems like so long ago now...
@kyle I am speaking at two in person, so wild!
@yaelwrites Weird! I have submitted quite a few talks for SCALE but so far have gotten radio silence. Either all my pitches were bad, or they are still debating whether they are going to have the conference (in March).
@kyle I am doing my annual one with David Huerta at CactusCon and I submitted at Shmoo to help me get a ticket and they weirdly accepted my talk… 😬 I just hope to get to Defcon this year; we’ll see
@kyle @yaelwrites I think SCaLE hasn't yet gotten talk approvals out
Deciding to go in person, then have delta and omicron hit probably impacts whether or not SCaLE can take place
@kyle well I think it’s different for men sometimes (though one of my male friends who is sorta Internet famous now certainly gets his share from the alt right… but he mostly complains about how awkward it is when people he just met say they’re big fans, which is nice but just weird for him I guess?)
