Apple always uses security and privacy as a cover for more control: "Apple says it must tightly control the way software is installed ... to protect its customers from ... viruses and other security threats and ... apps that invade its customers’ privacy." washingtonpost.com/technology/

@kyle *shrug* That's what Apple is for. Its for people who want the walled garden and to be lead gently down the path by the hand. These customers don't want digital diversity, they want safety and trust Apple more than 3rd parties.

Since they are less than half of the smartphone market, and they are filling a customer desire, albeit one I don't care for, I don't see any problem with it.

@gedvondur The problem is the rest of the tech market follows their lead on most things, including this. Apple is further along, but the same measures are being implemented everywhere else as well.

@kyle I admit it's a possibility, Apple does tend to suck the air out of the room, but I think their actual influence is less than their reputations.

If that heavy following does happen, some other company will get rich filling the market niche of people who want more digital freedom. The duopoly of Apple and Google for smartphone operating systems isn't forever, everything commoditizes over time.
