@eighthave @delta as much as I dislike Slack, they do this. Alt-click on web, long-press on mobile, then "Mark unread". It moves the "unread" line to just above the selected message in the chat/thread
@bremner @0xDEADBEEF yeah, that's the rub. There are free non-snikket instances but the signup and trust/reliability is a bit shaky. Hard to convince people to pay for ones like conversations.im when they initially only use it to interact with me. Quick.sy is Android-only. Wish there was a big one that used the original WhatsApp "first year free, then $1/year" style pricing model to kick start some network effect.
@0xDEADBEEF @bremner @snikket_im Snikket is good, and easy to invite others onto. However, it needs someone to run an instance, or use a hosted one. Somewhat similar to mastodon in that way, but lacking the large, public, free instance.
For those who believe that the western liberal democracy is more effective than Chinese communism, consider that China is ahead of its #climate goals while western liberal democracies are behind. "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (Shakespeare quote, not singling out). If we are to prevent authoritarians from expanding, we need hold our governments to account. We also must take personal responsibility and do what we can to reduce our own climate impact https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/29/china-wind-solar-power-global-renewable-energy-leader
@dthompson and most NA hosting and internet providers now have some IPv6 path, though it sadly still takes manual effort in many cases
@dthompson what prevents you from going down an IPv6 path instead? NAT hole punching is interesting, but generally only a North American focused initiative
Have you heard of #StreetComplete for #OpenStreetMap ?
It's a fun OSM "editor", gamified, to make it more interesting for casual or new mappers.
Do you know that there's a fork called #SCEE with advanced editing capabilities (like editing tags directly), and meant for experienced mappers? It's still a fun app. 🥳
The Linux coders turning the ROG Ally and other handhelds into Steam Deck clones
It's not an easy process, but it's getting close to a nearly full SteamOS feel.
✨ Import from Instagram issues have been fixed in the latest commits!
If you have an import that has been stuck on "Processing", it will be properly processed once your instance admin updates to the latest commits!
Pixelfed.social has now processed all imports, you may have to wait until your admin updates for your import to finish processing.

Babies, use this service however you like and in ways that bring you and your friends the most joy and the best sense of safety. Hammer the like button if you want. Block whoever you feel like, for whatever reason you want.
You don't owe anybody else engagement in the form they might prefer - or at all.

"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

Reddit got a lot right in the past, but when a platform turns its back on the community that supports it, it doesn’t end well.
Just finished my #instagram to #pixelfed migration; the implementation is so smooth, excellent implementation by @dansup - very well done!
Social media’s job is to show you posts from the people you follow, but social media’s business model is to charge news companies to reach their subscribers. That’s a bad deal for everyone (except the platforms’ owners!)

> In their damning report of education technology Human Rights Watch found that 89% of the 150 products they examined “monitored or could monitor children, in most cases secretly and without the consent of children or their parents”. With CryptPad students can learn without being surveilled and tracked.

Me: I won't discuss business in a room with an Alexa, because Amazon is my business competitor and they eavesdrop.
Various other folks:
Today: Amazon to pay fine for eavesdropping. https://www.npr.org/2023/06/01/1179381126/amazon-alexa-ring-settlement
If we priced externalities into the cost of fossil fuels, it’s not a profitable business.
The cleanup costs in California will be triple the industry’s projected profits, and that doesn’t even include cleaning up CO₂ and CH₄ from the atmosphere.

The beepberry looks very interesting. A blackberry keyboard on a device powered by a raspberry pi zero, and all quite inexpensive.
