@jcc @Bubu I use Conversations on Android, and have SMS in that via jmp.chat

Unfortunately no great XMPP client for iOS yet, but Siskin and Monal are continually improving (and continually fighting Apple's increasing restrictions).

@dthompson that's pretty much what the shops do. Big, fancy mitre saws though that's not really required.

@Carnivore @Motomurphyadv more like reducing from 2 sets of spying agencies to 1 set

@dthompson I agree but unfortunately there still isn't an alternative that is buildable from source, e2ee-by-default, and works well on both iOS and Android. With the recent WhatsApp snafu, it's unfortunately the best option for those users.

Once Element (or an alternative matrix client) becomes more usable and feature complete, or a good XMPP iOS client emerges (works well for notifications from third party servers), then we can put a nail in Signal.

@Bubu still using Instagram and WhatsApp though?

Many of our followers are FOSS people, but for those who are not, WhatsApp now insists you share data with Facebook or delete the app. I say delete the app AND Facebook. We use #Signal on the farm, private, secure, open source!

@Greg explosions in the sky. Esp "the earth is not a cold dead place"

@mattj@mastodon.technology @0 the unique thing about XMPP is that the client and the server are (usually) not from the same source, making workarounds more difficult.

@joeyh@octodon.social @dthompson I did the same, though I find the bungees don't weather well. Starting to disintegrate after one season. Also didn't realize how heavy a garbage can half-full of compost is to roll... Will have to make more and distribute to do better rotation from "still looks like food" to "quality dirt"

@ancommie @colinl @dajbelshaw @RussSharek with OMEMO (same underlying protocol as Signal, adapted for XMPP) the server admin cannot see your messages. They can still see the metadata of who you're communicating with and how often. Thousands of small servers are more difficult to breach en masse than a few big ones, so the strength is more in the distribution.

Also, can run your own (or trusted tech friend) with something like Snikket fairly easily

@mattj@mastodon.technology @0 also, as much as I dislike the way that Moxie handles Signal (aggressively against actual FOSS or connecting with any forked client, etc), at least the source is available and it's not run by Facebook. WhatsApp is worse in every way.

@mattj@mastodon.technology @0 it's technical issues where Apple keeps breaking things in ways that notifications from third party servers don't work well. The XMPP devs (Tigase/Siskin, Monal, prosody, etc) keep fixing them and then Apple makes a change to break it again.

@0

Lack of Quicksy on iOS (or really any sufficiently decent iOS XMPP client) is the only thing keeping me recommending Signal to family & friends

I am so impressed with how Pullman has, with the 20 year gap since the Golden Compass / #HisDarkMaterials, seamlessly updated the themes of his work to deal with today's pressing issues in The Secret Commonwealth.
@books

@mattl and then in Canada there's a nationwide "Boston Pizza" chain which also has no relationship to Boston (and confuses people visiting from Boston)
