@brennen I had to copy and paste into another program to see that it could be rendered as p.a.y.p.a.l

Wonder how many were confused by the spam due to poor rendering and lack font support 😛

@ehashman can turn off video and mute audio for a bit, but that doesn't have the same effect of reducing the scope of people to interact with. Unfortunate how these become long large performances which are even more draining and anxiety inducing than parties IRL.

Dear web developers and admins,
please stop embedding Google's hideous #ReCaptcha into your websites. Its algorithm is faulty, forcing regular users to click dozens or even hundreds of fire hydrants, bicycles, or traffic lights each day. It puts a 'suspicious activity' flag on users who won't obey to Google's business model - such as people who don't sign into Chrome, use anonymity VPNs, or use browser extensions to suppress common tracking mechanisms. Enough is enough. Stop it.

@dajbelshaw @RussSharek what's the issue with that quote? Also, can use other xmpp servers such as dismail.de without cost (though I hear donations are appreciated there)

@dthompson @brennen could still do the monitor, but use a camera in the next room to get twice the fire ambiance for the same amount of wood...

@resynth1943 @zeh @andreas has anyone been able to effectively run a server? Last I read there were several attempts but no successes.

@mhoye depending on how much effort and parts one wants to piece together, there are z-wave smoke detectors (eg, First Alert). Can setup something with OpenHAB/HomeAssistant to send a message on event. Combine with jmp.chat for SMS. That's at least 3 layers deep, though. Someone else may have a more direct path

@wxcafe@social.wxcafe.net unless it's a crossover cable. Then one end of each. But A-to-A is an abomination

Have you tried inviting someone to join you on Mastodon?

✅ You can invite people to join your Mastodon instance by clicking on "Invite People" in the bottom left corner of the desktop interface. This lets you generate customised invitations to suit your purposes. Share the generated links with those you want to invite.

Many instances which are officially closed to new members still allow sign-ups through invitations from existing members.

@liw @brennen @mhoye if possible, moving the data patch panel separate to the power one will eliminate a lot of ghosts in the network

Please note: everyone who's doing all this performative work to get something Chrome-like to respect their privacy and agency instead of switching browsers is actively making the ecosystem worse by showing the webdev community that it's fine to ignore non-chrome browsers.

Visa and Mastercard, acting together, are currently a chokepoint for online payments. This means their arbitrary policies often decide what you can read - or watch - online. eff.org/deeplinks/2020/12/visa

Consumers in Canada have until Sept 2021 to be paid as part of the class action lawsuit against Microsoft. No receipts needed for software purchased since 1998 (Windows, Office, Word, Excel, or MS-DOS) for claims up to $250.

@dredmorbius unfortunately boosting on the fediverse will have little-to-no impact (other than making a few others aware). What's the recommended way to let the CBC know directly how bad of an idea this is, and how it erodes trust in them?

Stop Paid Content on CBC

... CBC management has launched a new marketing division called CBC Tandem. Its purpose is to sell corporations the opportunity to disguise their advertising as our journalism. CBC is using its resources to help advertisers trick Canadians.

They call what they produce “paid content”. And it’s insidious. It looks and sounds like the news stories and podcasts we produce. It’s found on the same websites and apps. But it’s not news, or even information. It is advertising that pretends to be news. And we believe strongly it must stop.

CBC Tandem promises corporate clients they can “leverage” the CBC’s reputation by aligning their message with the “trust Canadians have in our brand”.

That reputation was built by people like us - generations of journalists who earned your trust by informing you faithfully and truthfully every day. “Paid content” does not leverage that reputation, it makes a mockery of it. ...

The term Fake News dates to 1989 when prepared propaganda Video and Audio "News Releases" (VNR/ANR), packaged to look like native news, began appearing on local TV and Radio stations. The CBC are going down this path.

It's not "leveraging trust", it's #betrayal.

@Miaourt @cjd depends where in the world you are. In Canada a large portion of the banking sector are Credit Unions which are mostly member owned cooperatives.

@dthompson @kai a large tarp is quite more affordable (flip & go!). Doesn't help for storage-and-workspace-that's-not-the-basement, though
