Consumers in Canada have until Sept 2021 to be paid as part of the class action lawsuit against Microsoft. No receipts needed for software purchased since 1998 (Windows, Office, Word, Excel, or MS-DOS) for claims up to $250.

@dredmorbius unfortunately boosting on the fediverse will have little-to-no impact (other than making a few others aware). What's the recommended way to let the CBC know directly how bad of an idea this is, and how it erodes trust in them?

Stop Paid Content on CBC

... CBC management has launched a new marketing division called CBC Tandem. Its purpose is to sell corporations the opportunity to disguise their advertising as our journalism. CBC is using its resources to help advertisers trick Canadians.

They call what they produce “paid content”. And it’s insidious. It looks and sounds like the news stories and podcasts we produce. It’s found on the same websites and apps. But it’s not news, or even information. It is advertising that pretends to be news. And we believe strongly it must stop.

CBC Tandem promises corporate clients they can “leverage” the CBC’s reputation by aligning their message with the “trust Canadians have in our brand”.

That reputation was built by people like us - generations of journalists who earned your trust by informing you faithfully and truthfully every day. “Paid content” does not leverage that reputation, it makes a mockery of it. ...

The term Fake News dates to 1989 when prepared propaganda Video and Audio "News Releases" (VNR/ANR), packaged to look like native news, began appearing on local TV and Radio stations. The CBC are going down this path.

It's not "leveraging trust", it's #betrayal.

@Miaourt @cjd depends where in the world you are. In Canada a large portion of the banking sector are Credit Unions which are mostly member owned cooperatives.

@cypnk have you tried finding a station with no frequency indication? It's incredibly frustrating as one needs to wait several minutes to find out where they are, then guess how far to go to get to the desired station.

It looks great, but if one listens to more than one station it would be a nightmare to use.

@dansup what does that mean? Assumed that applied filters altered the stored photo which would naturally federate. Does this mean that the original photo plus filter get propagated? Or that filters from another instance can be applied to this one? Or something else?

@Gina avoid the complications and just send the Kruidnoten my way 😉

@brennen @mhoye are they really that hoopy? I don't get the sense they know where their towels are

@abbienormal @mntmn so then the pinephone for you (and then get to take advantage of the software funded by Librem5 development)?

I ordered as part of the crowd funding campaign, and have been strung along with slipping release dates for 3 years. Starting now, likely wouldn't order until they get the wrinkles out and iterate (probably "fir" batch, if they ever get there).

I don't have regrets, as the ecosystem needed a kickstart. Hopefully others join & produce

I’m told that many Germans are stockpiling cheese and sausages in anticipation of a COVID lockdown — planning, in other words, for a Wurst-Käse scenario

@jeremiah @Phaserune @purism or someone who understands that it takes more than hardware to create a viable phone. PinePhone gets to slurp up the software effort paid for by Purism for the Librem 5, and relies on community for the rest. The result is a phone that's cheap but not yet useful as a daily driver. They both fill a need. Those who can afford to, help to drive the ecosystem forward. Those who can't still have the low end option.
