Raspbian should not exist, BTW. They had a little bit of cover forking Debian for performance reasons but that is long since past.
The Raspbian fork's purpose now is lock rpi users into a ghetto that prevents them from using non-rpi hardware.
As I approach the end of the year, I wanted to look back and see how many projects I have contributed to (not counting the ones that I maintain). This usually happens because I notice an issue with a project. Generally I file an issue, it's rewarding to in and fix the issue myself, plus the issue gets fixed faster since the maintainer can review and click the "merge button"! This is especially so for documentation, it is very easy to just fix the documentation and file an MR.
This is genius!
#Berlin is allowing cyclists to claim on-street parking spaces for their bikesโfor free.
At the same time, they're boosting the price of on-street parking for drivers.
That sends a very, very clear message.

@dlakelan @cross @mhoye exactly. A little imagination and many uses become viable. From big tech fighting for "live" distribution, to the stated common updates, to the existing IPTV "every 15 minutes start another stream of the most popular things", and beyond. Many people need the same data within a reasonable window in many instances. Not always the case, but common enough that the infrastructure could provide much more efficiency at low cost
This tool that searches your Spotify playlists for the music on Bandcamp works great. Makes a nice list of what to get on today's #BandcampFriday where the revenue share is waived and it all goes to the artist.
@dlakelan @mhoye @cross 20 years ago the core network infrastructure supported IP level multicast. Super efficient for broadcast. But the stumbling block was that there was no incentive to use it especially at the edges since the primary charge method was for egress not ingress. That model collapses under multicast. Tech was there, lack of profit motive was the problem.
Needed a laptop replenishment since the old ones were dead & dying. Purchased a refurbished Lenovo #x230 (which has #coreboot & #libreboot options) and a #PineBookPro . Though the base price was similar, by the time the PBP was delivered it was 50% more expensive.
Though the PBP has a nicer feel and bigger screen, for my purposes (mainly a couch computer for web browsing, video playing, some light development work, and occasionally kid school needs) it isn't worth the premium.
French authorities declare the use of Microsoft Office and Google Docs illegal in schools and education markets, as they donโt follow GDPR and might disturb later competition by making students used to these proprietary solutions.
Apparently we have new #metric prefixes, hooray!

Can I have a 2 quettabyte drive for my laptop now?
Learned that public libraries are launching their own local music streaming services and have been low-key obsessed ever since. My report is now up on Vice's Motherboard! https://www.vice.com/en/article/5d34px/libraries-are-launching-their-own-local-music-streaming-platforms
I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
