@dthompson I have family with both styles. The insert will still throw heat without a blower on, just less efficiently. If you have space for a stove (and don't mind losing the hearth) then that does have the benefits you mentioned. Though we did try boiling water for tea on a couple of them, but if the stove is not specifically built for it, it's difficult/impossible to get the water temp nearly high enough. It is enough to warm water to improve humidity, though.

@dthompson solid plan. Thinking of a wood or a gas insert?

I had no idea that there were publicly accessible outdoor bake ovens in some Toronto parks (that were only recently closed due to the pandemic). Wonder if the idea could be implemented locally.

@flockingbird also, the people looking for a LinkedIn alternative will align with those avoiding github for the same Microsoft reason.

@flockingbird after Microsoft bought github, many people dropped their account or refuse to access it if they have one. The people using sourcehut or codeberg would much more likely be in that set.

As noted in the other thread, if discoverability is the concern, then following the Linux model might make sense (with pointers/direction to the official non-gh instance).

@dthompson better than the bad old days pre-vm where one would brick their main development machine

@dthompson I find these heat the person well without needing to heat the entire space. Definitely use passive where possible, but sometimes that's not enough and this can fill those gaps

@dthompson feels like somehow this year has bumped us onto the darkest timeline, so sadly this is not really a surprise

@mhoye @jfred JMP.chat is an SMS service (bridge to xmpp) that can be scripted using sendxmpp and I use it for notifications from home camera. There might be something similar for matrix, too

@dthompson I hope your optimism ends up being warranted

I'm having a tough time navigating the contrast between the the number of new Covid cases in Ontario, population 14.7M, in the last day - 700 - with the number of new covid cases in Vietnam, population 95M, over the last MONTH, that being... 30.
