Lazyweb, if I want a smoke alarm that can send an alert to my phone, but do not want it feeding the FAANGs, what are my options?
@mhoye In my experience, the thing to look for if you want smarthome gear that doesn’t track you is Z-Wave or Zigbee devices. They have no connection to the internet beyond whatever hub you use, and that can be something like a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant with USB adapters.
Haven’t looked into them in detail personally but it appears there are plenty of Z-Wave smoke detectors out there.
@jfred that plus an SMS service is almost certainly what I need.
