driving to a local stove dealer that, judging by the google reviews, is very polarizing. hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

I actually had a good experience with this place. Got a lot of good info and narrowed my options to 2 stoves. January would be the earliest I could get it installed, which is about what I expected. Feeling like maybe this is all a silly idea, though.

if anyone gives a shit it looks like the Vermont Castings Dauntless will be my pick if I go through with this. none of the Jotul models are a good fit.

my main problem is now seeing if I can increase the size of the hearth without creating a tripping hazard. if the hearth could be flush with the floor that would be great but my hunch is that it's not possible or else lots of people would do it.

after much thought I've decided this whole thing just isn't gonna work. was an interesting idea, though.

@dthompson so... Back to the insert, or abandoning all changes at this time?
Was interesting to follow along, though. I learned about catalytic combustors for wood stoves, which is appreciated.
If you get a chance to mention why the Vermont Castings would work (and was a front runner) but all the Jotul's were out, I'd be interested

@keverets and I'm not going to look into an insert at this time either. It's the same amount of money for something that doesn't really do what I want.

@keverets the mid size Vermont castings stove would give me the necessary 24" clearance to the wall. my fireplace is unfortunately in a corner so I can't get a big stove. The Jotul f 45 would have proper clearance as well and is of a similar size, but it is deeper so it would require an even larger hearth extension.
