Thoughts about / experiences with https://furilabs.com/ ? What's different about it? I have the usual veteran questions, ie, do phone calls work, is the kernel work upstream, does mute work, will it burn you...
@johns well, it looks like furrylabs, so it should be mandatory for all fedi users.
@bremner @johns That name is a choice. I predict the name will likely help to have the tech furry community contributing to early rollout development issues. The name may hurt long term adoption as many people do not want to be publicly associated with furry culture including many that actively participate. Do you want to tell your friends offline these phrases?
"Check out my new FuriPhone!"
"Sorry, I can't install that app. I use the FuriPhone."
"Does your app support the FuriPhone?"
@johns I have to say posting this from a librem.one account gave me a big chuckle
Maybe @rasumi can answer your questions. According to his recent (German) talk [0] at the “Datenspuren“ conference he has a FLX1. The video timestamp points to the relevant section.

Sure! To answer the questions you mentioned (all for the original FLX1 which has a successor due to the tariffs, but should be similar for the FLX1s): calling works (incl. VoLTE), all other basic things work incl. GPS and NFC. Especially the android integration is very good (they forked waydroid and adapted it). Their battery daemon is quite good so it does not get hot and battery lasts a day at medium usage. Afaik, no kernel work was done/necessary, since this is a Halium based project and it uses some proprietary android drivers to get basic stuff working. It's not the most open approach due to that (if you want that, have a look at e.g. postmarketos), but if you're fine w a compromise, I doubt you'll find a better working modern linux phone right now.
@FestplattenSchnitzel @johns ah, and maybe as an addition: the developers are in constant contact with the community over a large bridged matrix + telegram room. You can tell there or in github issues or in the forum if something does not work for you. E.g. there were initially mobile data problems with vodafone germany since apparently they do uncommon things in their network but the furilabs guys offered 1:1 help using a tmate session, fixed the problem and delivered it then to everyone else w their next monthly update. I was impressed.
also, what are the nonfree bits
