The fact that Windows and Adobe have been able to logjam themselves into being the "default" in their respective verticals is the perfect argument as to why government regulation is not only needed, but necessary.

Right now, in the heavily regulated banking industry, banks get dinged on there audits for using open source software because it is "less secure."
I don't think the regulations will go the way you want them to go.

@jlcrawf regulate the monied interests that classify FOSS as less secure. Problem solved.

Yep. There are definitely no monied interests in government that would make regulations that would help big businesses while hurting smaller open source projects with no money.
