Hey math teachers/homeschooler people - what's your thinking on when to allow calculators? Prompted by 9-year-old getting gnarly long division problems. She can set up the logic and can execute but no adult would ever do these by hand.

I try to avoid calculators as long as possible. I tutored a 9th grader who wanted to use a calculator to add 5+3. When I didn't let him use one, he resorted to using his fingers. Calculators can be a good tool, but they can also become a crutch.
