The media has been reporting a lot on mastodon, but often reports as though mastodon is the fediverse. I saw a well-intentioned article today that the platform started six years ago, but this erases the immense amount of work that many put into ActivityPub.

Having done standards work myself and learning that I am unable to manage the immense social pressures of coordinating divergent goals and stay happy, my hat's off to the dedicated folks who made the fediverse happen.

Ok I see that the hashtag #introduction is trending - likely due to the musky smell emanating from a certain blue bird 🀒! So, here it is: I am female, #audiologist, #Canadian, interested in #linguistics, #dogs (wishing @bunsenbernerbmd would come over from the bird), #science, #ScienceFiction, #Apple, #fun, #mystery, #history, support #Ukraine and #IranianProtests, #IndigenousRights

For some reason, Mastodon is experiencing a great influx of new users. πŸ€”

Within one month our following grew from 15k to 16k.

Happy to have been here since years already. πŸ₯°πŸ€©πŸ₯³

I was thinking, what if as an admin of a mastodon server, you could associate a standard set of #hashtags with your server, say no more than 200 chars worth, that would be added to local toots automatically? So if your server was themed, such as infosec.exchange, you might add some standard tags like #infosec to it, and in their options, people could elect to turn that off if they wanted or even elect to turn it off on a #toot-by-toot basis.

The general concept here to start building communities around standardized hashtags. Obviously, others could use the tags, and multiple servers/communities might use overlapping or even the same tags, but it would also mean that if I was into #infosec, I could pull up a column with that tag, and all the content from the #infosec communities would show up by default.

Being on a new network reminds me of the early days of blogging, when writing felt (for me) like a way to organize my thoughts rather than to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Writing for personal insights and to possibly generate a discussion with a small number of people feels refreshing.

@cybette the new iPhone has 48mp camera and you turn that into really great 8 or 12 mp shots many many years to late apple cough cough nokia 808 pueeview!!!

Got my Pinebook Pro earlier this week and installed Fedora this morning. Time to put this thing through it's paces. πŸ˜„

One thing that bugged me at #KubeCon - a person came to ask a "technical" question, looked at me + another lady at the booth (who's a product manager), declared "you two don't look technical, who else can I talk to?" TBH I've encountered this countless times, but after 20 years in the industry & still no progress? 😞

Oh and happy 57th Singapore national day, majulah Singapura! ❀️

I just tested out the continuity camera webcam with my iPhone and MBP, and I gotta say, it’s REALLY slick. The camera connects almost immediately, there’s very little lag, I didn’t see much, if any, stutter, and the picture is FAR beyond that offered by the integrated webcam

Yes, you can get an external webcam that does the job just as well, but why would I when I already have a decent enough camera built right into my phone?

Julian Assange turns 51 today – for almost 12 years he has been deprived of liberty [@UN], this is his 4th birthday in a UK jail for publishing the truth and protecting the public’s right to know - he must be freed #FreeAssange51
