Signal messengar app is (mandatory) installed on the phone. But I can add another device to access Signal. For example a PC. If I type a message on my PC, which route does the message take to be transmitted to the receiver? Does it go via my LAN to the phone and is transmitted from there: Obviously it is available on my phone. I suppose the message itself takes the same route. But can anyone tell and explain? Same with WhatsApp?

Signal's linked devices work independent of the master. ie. even if your phone where signal is registered is offline, you can send/recieve messages on the linked devices. Offline devices get synced up with the server when they come online.
With Whatsapp, earlier you had to have both the phone and PC online to use WhatsApp web app. Things could have changed now.
