Interesting development. The company Medium now runs a Mastodon server at the domain me.dm and they are inviting prominent Medium writers to switch their Mastodon accounts to the domain.

I imagine more and more companies will run their own instances for their employees & clients and use this as a form of advertising.

Mastodon may never have the same high MAUs as Twitter but it may someday have just as much cultural impact.

Imagine each news station running its own instance and giving all of their employees a verified account. It was very important when Twitter years ago gave a blue checkmark to every local news anchor (even if they only had 20 followers).

Companies like Apple that want to have full control of their messaging could put Apple executives on their own instance.

@cary I think (hope) eg newspapers, org, authorities and companies will have their own instances. It will, like you wrote, give them easier to make verification eg the green Mastodon mark for employees. It will be easier for us to understand it really is a person from that company, org, etc. And of course, the person can have one or more additional accounts if desirable to distinguish between roles.
But there may be drawback as well, that I am not aware of.
