I think I’ve heard, eg at MintCast, that some IoT devices use very old and outdated versions of the Linux kernel, and by that increased vulnerability for privacy and security attacks. Any comment?
@zaivala Thanks Moss! That is really old. I suppose, don't know, many IoT are not good at issuing updates anyway. I wonder how many Things that have some sort of automatic updates of eg firmware or other sw, Android team at least should have some resources and will to fix issues, more than many IoT may have. @hehemrin Many IoT devices, such as light bulbs, do not have an update or upgrade facility, you're stuck with what you get. You may be able to force an upgrade through your router.
@zaivala Hmmm. I'm not surprised. Despite, or because, I'm an electronics engineer in telecom, I'm cautious in connected things, I do mostly better without them, although it is at the same time fantastic what you can do - tempting. Or, as a precaution it can be good to put them on a separate network, that can help in some aspects.
@hehemrin son of them are using kernel 1.x or 2.x. Hard to enforce security on those. But that hasn't been that long since Android finally decided to use 4.4 as the oldest kernel, so it's a bit of pot calling the kettle black. I still have one Android device that claim to be running Android 9 but the kernel was 3.3.
